It has been a cold and dreary day up top today...yesterdays high was 46 with the low at 33. Today it has been rainy and windy with the temperature just above freezing. Kind of miserable weather to be outside in, so we've been staying busy oiling furniture inside where is it warm and dry.
Now, as promised, the 2015 Shirt design! A dollar from every shirt sold will be donated to Trails Forever while they are working on Alum Cave Trail and we will start selling them Monday!

What are the restrictions going to be while they are working on Alum Cave this year? Will it be closed?

Marilyn, see the post from 3/17 regarding info on the trail closures. It gives all the details.

if you Google the elevation it says 6594'. I'm sure the ones that did the shirt know the correct elevation. It sure feels like 6594 every time we hike up to the summit. Yes, this debate over the "correct" elevation at the Lodge will apparently not cease. If you want to believe what Google says, then that's a personal choice. The officially recognized elevation for the PEAK of MT. KECONTE by the Park Service is 6593. Therefore, "down" at the Lodge, approximately at the front door of the Dining Hall, the elevation is 6360 and this figure has been shown on one of the Lodge's own pages; this can be found on previous posts/pages, etc. Whoever designs the t-shirts is following past "traditions", however erroneous or inaccurate they may be. In other words, it is impossible for both the peak or summit of the mountain to be 6593 ! I, too, personally believe that signs should at the least give correct information. Some will agree with me, others will disagree, and that's fine. G'day

Sorry. I'm not used to typing on this new tablet. (not "Keconte" but of course "Leconte" and I meant to write "......both the peak or summit AND the Lodge to be 6593)....

Ah, the long-standing controversy over the true elevation of LeConte Lodge has been reactivated. I have to admit, I'd rather see the correct one for the Lodge on all the souvenirs sold in the office. But that ain't gonna happen so...

It's OK, it will never change, just be thankful it is there!! And you that can make it up, be thankful!!

I for one don't really care what the elevation is. I still get a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when I make it to the lodge. I'm 70 this year and it will be my fifth year in a row to make the hike.

It's always satisfying to reach the lodge, I agree. Keep on hiking, Mike!

(Not the Marilyn that asked about the Alum Cave restrictions - I already know them!) but another Marilyn....Ruthie: can you tell me the colors the shirts are available in this year other than the red and green colors. Just trying to decide if I want to make a one day trip up to get mine in case a good color is not available in my size when I come up for my annual overnighter in September. Thanks.

I'm so excited to see the shirt designs and hope this year is finally the year I can make it all the way to the top so I can get one! Norman, I never replied to the post you made a week or so ago about your wife never being able to make it to the lodge. I read it to my husband and we said if ya'll want to meet us there later this year (in October) your wife and I can try together to make it up there. We make take longer than anyone else has but at least maybe we'll get there! Really enjoying Ruthie's posts and pics!

Rebecca, the water system was in service when I left up there Wednesday so if the temperature is above freezing you should be able to get water from the system. The spring is always open.

LOVE it - this is the BEST ever. I know the only way to get it is to hike it. I have been up there 3 times - need to do just one more trail - Bullhead, not planning on coming there this year but soon!

LOVE the new shirts and the fact that a donation is made to "trails forever". I will have to add a sticker to mine showing that I have done the elusive 6th trail as well (brushy mt trail from greenbrier, to trillium). It shares part of the 5 trails...so I get it. But it is still another trail and I love the fact that I have done it (one of my fave trails in the park)...although I had to turn at the ice wall just below the summit due to time limits....so I guess I will have to try again! This route is 9.1 miles each way...so it is not listed on the website. But it is an awesome trail, too! Thanks for showing the tee shirts....LOVE them (cant wait to get mine!) Comments are closed.
