Slick Trails Ahead

7/27/2013

I apologize for being a bit slow today. The mountain is socked in and my internet reception is not very strong. The clouds are hanging low and threatening rain. It is looking like it is going to be a wet day up top. We have enjoyed our two days of sun. The high yesterday was a pleasant 69º with a low of 45º. It has been cool at night. I am afraid our sunny days have come to end for a little while. My vitamin D is caught up for a few days so I should be good. I did want to remind people to be very careful while hiking on the slick rocks. Remember, take it slow and watch your footing. If possible, walk around the slick rocks or get some one to watch out for you. There is a slick layer of moss growing over everything from all of this moisture. Remember to take it slow and steady. See you on the mountain.

We were up on July 13, came up Alum Cave. This was my 7th trip up the mountain and I have never had so much trouble slipping and sliding even with good hikers on, all the rain really has made the rocks and roots really slippery and water running where it doesn't usually run. I 2nd the warning here to plan to take it slow! Was a great trip up regardless, got to see the llamas. Thanks as always for the hospitality!

Yep, Alum in spots July 4th was in creek in spots sloshing all the way up.

I second that, Laura! We came up Rainbow Falls and back down Bull Head on the 16/17 and it was incredibly wet. All those big, pretty rocks are slippery and there are little creeks running places that they don't normally exist. Lots of mud in places, too.

Sitting on the deck of a chalet looking at LeConte, it is really socked in. It is odd, there are blue skies above your clouds, but there looks to be a steady stream of clouds hugging the mountain. Leaving on Wednesday and I have been holding off my LeConte hike until that perfect high pressure see for miles day...but don't see that in the forecast. Hiked out to Charlis Bunion yesterday, which has no stream crossing that I recall, but the rocks were slick, and a lot of leaf wet mush.
