Slushy Trails

11/10/2012

Picture
Time to get out the shorts and sandals, well not quite. It was a blazing 52 degrees yesterday. Of course, there is still 14" of snow on the ground and the low did get down to 27. I think I will stick to my pants and snow boots. Looks as though we have some shoveling to do around the llama troughs. We are hoping to get a pack trip in on Monday. The weather sounds as though it is going to be beautiful and warm, or warmer. Chris and I hiked up Alum yesterday. The trail was much better then it was on Monday. Be prepared to get your feet wet. The run off was crazy. We used our stabelicers from the last log bridge to the top. It was slushy and slippery. I have not heard about any other trails. I will try and get some updates today. For now, I would go with the information that Nathan was giving.

@ Ann, its 5.5 miles via the Alum Cave Bluff trail. Difficult hike with elevation gain of about 2700'. A hiker in good condition should take about 4hrs to top. Longer if trail conditions are tough.

I can't believe it's finally almost here--we've been looking forward to this for so long! Allyson, I emailed you--I'll have a small recorder for my radio show and I'd like to interview you if you have time--I hope that's okay? We look forward to meeting you tomorrow!!

The Employees Only cabin looks like home.
God I wish I was young enough to work up there or that I had known about LeConte when I was young and fit. Guess I will just have to settle for the yearly trip in July.

My husband and neighbor are attempted the Alum Cave route this morning and I hope have made it to Leconte. My neighbors first attempt. I love the snow photos. Wish I was able to see it in person.
Meanwhile my 7 yr. old has caught the microwave on fire with a biscuit (smoke still in the home), my 3 yr. old has not stopped singing aloud since 7am and we just experienced an earthquake in Oak Ridge! It's only noon, what will happen by 5 this evening?! Hope the boys trip to the lodge has been as eventful.

My husband, son and daughter-in-law, and daughter and boyfriend are getting ready for a hike on November 19. I have been watching the weather roports and reading your daily posts. I am a bit nervous about our hike. We have prepared with ice grippers, etc. and are hoping for a good hike. Do you have any recommendations for a couple of hikers who have been to LeConte before and some who have not? I am very excited and can't wait to enjoy a place so beautiful.

Hi Mike & Leanne,
You will love LeConte and probably will make many more trips after this one.
This will be my 7th trip in 6 years and I love it! I'm excited to have my wife and son joining us this year. Myself and Norm have really enjoyed LeConte and met some really great friends on the mountain that are your neighbors. Hahaha
Look forward to meeting you guys and seeing Keith and Kathy again. We are so ready to take a break from work and get away. See ya on Wednesday!
