Snowy Sunday

11/3/2013

Picture
An unexpected 1.5" of snow greeted us this morning. Yesterday was a strange weather day. We went from sunny to cloudy, to sleet, to sunny, and back to flurries. One thing is for sure, the weather did not stop the day hikers. We were packed with hikers drinking hot chocolate and warming themselves by the heater. The temperatures never rose above 36º and the low was 23º. Friday was a perfect autumn day which led to Saturday being a typical winter day. Just goes to show how quickly things can change in these mountains.

Oh wow!!! Where did that come from? Hehe!! November is here, you just never know. Sunny one day, blizzard the next.

We are planning on hiking up for the day next Friday. Can't wait! Hope there will still be some snow.

Oh wow! We spent Friday night and came off the mountain yesterday. It was a lot cooler but we didn't expect this! You never know! Thanks for all the hospitality! You all are so great and the hot chocolate is the best in the world!

We were there yesterday for a day hike and love it. It was cold but so exciting to see our first snow of the season. Can't wait to come up again.

Don (from yesterdays comments about a ride share), I noticed the 513 area code so you are a fellow Cincinnatian. When not hiking the Smokys, where are some of the local gems that you have found in the Tri-state area?

Paul B,
Not sure if these are gems, but I like just about any Ohio State Park, also Germantown/Twin Creek Metroparks, and just about anything else. I am recently retired at 65 and I'm not an expert, I just like getting out there and staying active.

I like Twin Creek, I've done the south side loop a couple of times. I would like to take a weekend and backpack the whole thing. Keehner in West Chester is really nice for a suburban park and Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford is a nice day hike too. Red River Gorge is awesome if I can afford the 5 hour round trip. The Tri-State Hiking Club sets up a bunch of nice day hikes and an occasional overnight. Maybe I'll see you on the trail!

did you guys get the thunder yesterday as well? we had at least 4 rounds of sleet with thunder while climbing-descending mt. cammerer.
in between those events the views of the squalls in the distance were spectacular .

We were in a group of 7 (actually nine) that hiked to LeConte yesterday. We did experience all kinds of weather going up and coming down. We loved it! It started out sorta hot where we were shedding our clothes then later on we were putting them back on and more. When we got to the top (which took us about 5 hours), we have the most delicious meal , prepared by Allyson . The cookie was to die , also the soup was delicious. The sandwich was stuffed with chicken salad and ooooohhhhh the hot chocolate was so hot and good to our soul. Thank you to Allyson (which I did get to meet). It was slick coming down due to the wet leaves but oh so nice a hike down. The pellets of snow made the hike down so fun. Relaxing today and we just love these daily posts. Please everyone, do reserve you a meal on top when you get there. It is well worth it.
