Soak Up The Rays

9/20/2012

Picture
What a stupendous day for hiking around the mountain. The sun was shining bright. The high yesterday was 56 with a low of 40. It was nice to see it warmed up a little for last night's low. The crew took advantage of the amazing weather to soak up some rays. We were beginning to wonder if we were going to see the sun again. The autumn views are starting to come into play. The days are crisp allowing for amazing visibility. It won't be long before there is some awesome color happening down in the valley.

Yes, visibility becomes much better with the cool, crisp days, and nightsl time to get the telescope back out and set up; the lodge would be a great location for one, but no electical for gps tracking; I'm sure it's a delight to watch the daily progression of the fall colors as they engulf the mountain; G'day !

I'm guessing that picture was taken from the Bullhead, perhaps near Balsam Point, looking toward Newfound Gap in the background. The mid distance would then have to be Peregrine Peak just above the Alum Cave Trail. Is that right?

It was taken from Myrtle Point. It is looking out towards Charlie's Bunion.

Coming to see you next Tuesday. Bringing my oldest son for the first time. He is autistic and afraid of heights, so we are coming up Trillium and going down Bullhead. Looking forward to a great stay on the mountain. We are hoping to get to see a sunset this time. Four times in the past it was too cloudy.

Couldn't make it to LeConte yesterday so I went to my nearest next-best mountain - Roan Mountain - it was a beautiful day to be on top of any mountain!!! Looking forward to hiking up there one month from today!!!

Anyone ever hiked down Alum Cave Trail after dark?

I know the crew does. Last April we left the trailhead about 7:15 am and ran into one of them before we hit Arch Rock. We figured she must have left the lodge about 6:00 am at the latest. Unless she was moving at John's 26 minute pace.

Thinking about hiking up to watch the sunset and gaze at the stars before heading down. Last night hiking I did was back in 1983 while in the Army down in the Panama (Central America not Florida) jungle/swamp....not fun.

Have you thought about staying at the Shelter overnight? Given lights and ice-free conditions I don't suppose that hiking in the dark would be a problem. If you are going during the week, I don't think getting a shelter permit would be much of a problem. It adds weight, but you could get a good nights sleep and hike down with a whole bunch of folks after breakfast. When are you going?

Just want to do something different. Maybe next month or we'll wait till next spring.
