While it may be a sad year for the blackberries, the mountain ash is going crazy. The berries are painting the mountain bright red. This should give the bears some berries to munch on. Someone asked yesterday what could be done about the lack of food for the bear population. There is nothing that can, or should be done. This is how nature works. Some years are good and some are bad. The minute humans step in and start trying to "help" is the time we do more harm then good. The bears will learn to depend on us for food instead of following their natural instincts and seeking the food that is the correct diet for their wellbeing.

Thanks for the comments about how nature works. So many people don't understand the danger of "helping" the poor wildlife out. The last thing a hiker needs is a needy bear hanging around. It's better for all of us when they learn to stay away from shelters.

Excellent post on helping nature. (or the lack there of) Nature will take care of itself without human intervention. It must be understood that nature can be cruel, but best left to it's ways.
