Still A Lot of Ice

11/18/2010

A view of Cliff Tops
The skies are cloudy and it is looking like rain or snow for today. The high yesterday never reached above 32. The low last night was 21. Any snow that melted yesterday is now a sheet of ice. I urge anyone that is hiking up today to please have ice walkers. The last quarter mile of Alum is very slick. Be careful and be safe. We will see you up top.

Nice photo looking up at Cliff Tops; on my hike up in April I was passing this point and happened to look up and see someone looking down at me; sure gave that height some perspective ! Yes, that last quarter mile can be slippery.

Such a beautiful picture of cliff top! Alum trail is such beautiful trail. We are doing our second trip up to LeConte next summer and Alum trail was so awesome we would love to do it again but we would love to experience a different trail too.I am sure they all are simply beautiful! Are things winding down for all the employees on the mountain? Bet you miss the mountain during your time off.

What are the duties of the winter care taker? Is the lodge going to be open at all for day hikers? Thanks for the pictures....

Guy, the winter caretaker basically looks after the lodge and calls in the weather to the park service. The lodge is closed from November 24th- mid March. People do day hikes during the winter, but there are no hiker services during this time.

Allyson,
thank you so much for the daily updates and pictures this year. It's hard to believe you guys are almost done for the season. Enjoy your winter off and can't wait for Spring when you guys are back. Look forward to the updates and pictures from the winter care-taker too. I also hope you take a group picture and post it before your season is over.

Heading up Saturday for a day hike (lunch) and back down. Just spoke to a buddy who was there last weekend (Mitchell). Poor guy bought a t-shirt and left it behind. If it turns up, I can carry it back down. Looking forward to coming up Alum. Really appreciate your trail and weather updates. Thanks Scott

Made it up there twice this year and had a great time.....once in July overnight and a day hike up Alum and down Trillium in October. Thanks for the blog...we enjoy the updates and pictures. May do a day hike up this Saturday ifnthe ice isn't too bad.
Thanks again and enjoy your time away.
