If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having. Henry Miller
Morning,

It was another quiet day on the mountain. It was a high of 45 yesterday, but cloudy and blustery. There was a low of 38 last night. This is the first time there have been bursts of lightning in the valley as I was doing observation. It's pretty intense.

I was able to do a short hike out to Myrtle yesterday, then a few miles out Alum. The ice is slowly becoming a non issue. Winter keeps peeking in, then disappearing. I've heard there is precipitation expected over the next few days and a cold front coming through Wednesday evening which may turn the mountain treacherous again.

I finished cleaning the kitchen after my hike and did some reading. I was lucky enough to have a friend hike up a New York Times, some apples, bananas and spinach for me. Thanks to everyone for all their kindness!

Hi JP,
Love your quote for today. I love this blog every day of the year but there is just something very special about the winter caretakers posts. You are doing a fabulous job of giving us all a little peek into your daily routine up top! Stay warm..and safe!

Yay for more snow! Batten down the hatches JP! We're hoping for a wintery wonderland up near the lodge when we visit.

My fiance and I might be visiting you on Monday. Looking forward to being on the mountain again.

As always, take it easy!

Goodmorning JP, That make me so happy that you got a New York Times and the fresh fruit and spinach. I guess I worry about you up there just a bit to much. LOL Have a great day on the mountain that I would so love to be able to climb just once.

@Chris,

I saw your comment and checked out your post on the forums. Thanks for the suggestion! Hold on to that book for all it's worth because it appears to be gold nowadays! I looked it up on Amazon and ones listed in "new" condition are going for well over $100! I'm going to watch for it on eBay over the next couple months. Perhaps for our 2012 trip I'll be able to obtain a copy.

Thanks again!

"Rock of Ages" While enjoy lunch and the view from Cliff Tops in July, I noticed a lot of name carvings on the rock face. While I can't stand seeing this, one carving stood out. It was a bit large, artfully done and had to have taken hours.
It read "Ed Loomis Cov. KY July 3, 1939".
The most notable thing that happened on this Monday long ago was Lou Gehrig's "luckiest man" speech.
My wife did some research on Ed Loomis, and with JP's okay, ( and perhaps him taking a photo of the carving), would like to share a brief story of this guys life. I don't want to glorify grafitti!

Ohhh, fresh fruit and veges are a must. And probably I bet one of the things you love most. My kids would be ok without them, even though 2 out or 3 are adults now. Love your post, Enjoy!

JP, Welcome to beautiful Mt.LeConte. I am somewhat envious of you. Your pictures are beyond description. I look so forward to seeing them, your quotes and your comments. I wish for you a safe, wonderful winter on my beloved mountain. I will be in the Mountains New Year's Weekend and am hoping to make the trip up. If I do, I will bring some treats to you!!

Hey JP, glad you got some fresh fruit, some things we take for granted down here in the "civilized" world. Take care and enjoy the world from up there!
