Yesterday was a crazy weather day. We started out above the clouds and the temperature was reasonable for mid November. Our high was 44º. As the day progressed, we noticed a cloud cover hanging out over the mountain. We seemed to be stuck in the middle. We watched the temperatures drop and then the sleet and snow flurries moved in. The snow did not last long and we did not see any accumulation. The temperatures proceeded to drop making our low for last night 8º. I have decided that the number one thing I will not miss about this mountain is using the pit privy when it is 8º outside. We awoke this morning to a beautiful inversion. It is still really cold out there. We are currently looking at 11º. The temperatures are not expected to warm much today. Please, come prepared for extremely cold conditions if you are hiking up today. Be careful for black ice on the trails. There will be some slick spots.

Gazing longingly out over the valley below from high up on Mt. Leconte infuses one with a sense of being transported to another world, another set of conditions and variables with which all our senses are stimulated. There are many such vistas but Leconte just happens to be a favorite of a lot of people including myself. As this season draws near to its conclusion I am filled with an enlightening sensation of satisfaction despite not making to the lodge for a while due to unescapable requirements. However, thanks to this daily blog site my desire to be up there in any sort of weather conditions is sustained and energized to continue receiving the pleasant photos and narratives. I never forget how any crew member must be feeling as their stint slowly winds down as the as the duties they are responsible for keep them busy, and their dedication shines through brightly as can be seen from the multitude of positive comments from guests as well as readers who have all been treated with such immense respect and care. Soon, the winter interlude will settle in and we who follow this site will continued to be given reports from on high. I am appreciative for this and it adds much pleasure to my existence. Thank all of you who contribute to this, everyone. So to the crew I say good luck and best wishes and remember that no matter where you go, there you are ! May your bootsteps be firm and straightforward always.

That would be one way to wake up quick... a cold privy!!!! I love the thought of being stuck between clouds, just for a while. To be in your own world... to me it just sounds peaceful. We have you beat here in Ohio... it's 19 degrees right now. I think I would rather have your 11 degrees with that mountain under my feet and those awesome views to see!!!

Anyone have any trail updates? Planning on hiking up to the lodge and then back down with some friends on Sunday. Was looking to come up Rainbow Falls Trail and then back down Alum Cave. Prepared for the cold adventure...I think!

Well said Doug! Same thoughts in my head. Even down here in Gburg this morning, am longing for a cup of hot chocolate. Good Day to all.
