Summer????

6/2/2012

June 1st and the low was 34! It felt a bit strange putting on my down jacket this morning. Yesterday was cold and rainy with a high of 51. The sun is out this morning, hopefully that will warm us up a little.

School is out and the kids are on the mountain. We are fortunate to have Mark Pitt, our interpretive ranger, on the mountain for the weekends. He gives daily talks on different topics relating to Mt. LeConte and the Smokies. He is here Thursday through Sunday, during the summer and fall months.

I can relate to your comment regarding the weather. Hiked on Thursday (DB Natl Forest) and the weather was hot and humid. Friday, our high temp was about 60.

Yeah, I put my jeans and long sleve shirt on yesterday too. Seemed weird not wearing shorts. Still a bit chilly out today but I refuse to wear jeans today. Love the picture, sure can't see the cold in it. Thats a good thing!

We hiked to Mt. Leconte yesterday (June 1) as day hikers. It had been six years since our last ascent on our 25th Wedding Anniversary.. It was such a gift from God that my husband and I were able to make the trip after he had two heart surgeries, a heart attack and a pacemaker in 2011!!! The wather was cool and beautiful and we thought the rain had passed! It started misting rain early on the Alum Cave Trail and turned into a deluge just above the Bluffs. Our rain gear was just not adequate for the freezing cold rain and by the time we reached the lodge, the hot drinks we bought were welcome! The trail was a river! Beautiful experience!

Made my first trip up and back on Saturday, and it was AWESOME! Even though I do no exercising ever, we made it up and back in 6 hours. Still sore today, but totally worth it. I highly recommend the hiking poles, they help a lot. Wish the cave trail was marked better, that was SCARY...
