Summer Flowers and Ice Cream= Perfection

6/12/2014

The mountain laurel were in full swing when Chris and I hiked up on Tuesday. Chris says it is one of his favorite. I would have to agree. Between the last of the catawba rhododendron and the mtn. laurel, it was a beautiful show of vibrant pinks and delicate whites. It won't be long before the rhodo starts to bloom around the lodge.

It has been a fairly wet few days. The high yesterday was 55º with a low of 49º. We saw another .75" of rain yesterday. It is that time of the year when the afternoon thunder storms roll through and let loose.

We were super excited to hear from our 2013 crew member, Bethany, who is currently thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. She sent us a picture of her dominating the half gallon challenge. She has reached the Pine Grove Furnace State Park, which is a little over half way on the Appalachian Trail. One of the traditions is to chow down on a half gallon of Hershey's ice cream. Bethany had no problems finishing every bit. She is doing great and moving right a long. We can't wait to get the picture of her at the end her AT journey.

Great job Bethany! I think I'd toss my cookies if I ate all that ice cream at once. lol Your living the dream. I too, would love to hike the A.T. Very jealous, but someday I will. Good luck on your adventure, stay safe.

Way to go Bethany!! While I was hiking on the AT many years ago I dreamed of having a pie made out of Snickers candy bars. I guess anything to get the calories needed is good.

That spoon is much too small for such a large container of ice cream.

Congratulations on hitting the halfway point, Bethany.

Way to go Bethany! Is there a blog of your journey?

I have done small section hikes on the AT and I love it. I hope to do another this fall. Congrats Bethany on making it beyond the half way point and hope to see a post when you make it to Katahdin this fall. Good for you. I follow a few blogs of thru hikers from this season, who I have met during trail magic sessions. I would love to read your blog as well. We are rooting for you! GO MAINE!!!!

Eventually, I hope to hike the AT in sections, myself when I have the freedom to do so. I'm not altogether ruling out a thru-hike, but it seems less likely at this point.

What section are you planning to do this fall?

Just half of the smokies (maybe the other half in spring?) Probably the northern half, but haven't ruled out the Fontana half either. we shall see. I have done the Delaware water gap to long trail section before and day hikes on AT in smokies. I am yearning for a 3 day hike however!! smile.

I'm doing a 3-day trip in August, which will include a section at the AT between Charles Bunion (or just a bit northeast of there, actually) to Tricorner Knob shelter. From there it's back down the AT, and up to LeConte via the Boulevard trail; then back down via Trillium Gap on the last day.

I hope you have an enjoyable trip! : )
