The winds are howling this morning. It is a windy and wet mountain top. We received over an inch of rain yesterday and it is coming down at the moment. The clouds were whipping around Myrtle Point. It is amazing to watch the storm systems work their way through the mountains. Our very own crew member, Brad, spent a short time in school studying to be a meteorologist. He likes to point out the crazy storm systems we see hanging over the lodge. The only thing I am not fond of is when the storm is directly over head. You feel as though your head is in the cloud when it thunders. Oh, wait, my head IS in the cloud. I do, however, love the sound of the rain on the roof. It makes for great sleeping conditions.
The high yesterday was 61º with the being 51º. It is currently cloudy and wet. I believe the forecast is calling for rain today.

Raining here in Michigan this morn too. I was happy I didn't have to go out and water my tomato plants. Hope you get your head out of the clouds and enjoy your Birthday. Beautiful picture today, I needed a new screen saver. Thanks!!!

What is the wind doing when it's hollowing? :-) Is this a mountain term?

Leon, it is a mountain term. :) It is the sound the wind makes when it is blowing through the trees. Can be a bit eerie. It makes for great ghost story background sounds.

Ancient myths confirm this. Wolves hollow at the moon when it is full. This explains why the moon eventually hollows out and becomes a crescent. Similarly, when a wind hollows it becomes a tornado. In a more modern context, when Gilligan dressed up for a female character in an island Shakespeare production, the audience, along with Lovey and Thurston hollowed with laughter, eventually their coconuts were suitable for carrying water and performing scientific experiments.

And, yes, I just realized I posted "hollowing". It was a bit difficult waking up this morning, sorry for the error. That should be howling.

I should be the one to apologize for being such a smarty pants. I consider brushing my teeth before my coffee to be risky behavior, posting is WAY out there! I appreciate the fact that you are up early posting and all else you do. I always enjoy your photos with my coffee.

I always thought it was a seafaring term, based on this line from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner:"

A day or so ago someone was asking about what kind of weather to expect on their hike up the mountain. It was generally agreed that one should prepare for most any weather conditions, and at all times carry some sort of rain gear. A "throw away" poncho is better than not having anything to help keep the rain off. Comments are closed.
