Sunshine and Coffee

7/12/2013

Picture
A much different view this morning than yesterday. For the first time in a while, we woke up to a sea of clouds below us instead of on top of us. It is amazing how just a little sunshine to go with your morning coffee makes such a huge difference. I am sure the crew will be a bit spirited this morning. They seem to have a playfulness to them when we get a great sunrise. We had a cloudy day yesterday. The high was 68º with a low of 48º. The mountain was quiet. There were not a lot of day hikers around.

Chris and I are getting ready to head off the mountain for a few days. Nathan is back and ready to share some stories with you all. We will be back in a few days. I hope everyone has a great weekend and happy hiking.

Hi, wondering if anyone is planning on going up the 26th 27th or 28th of July. Wife is going out of town to be with her girlfriends and I am planning a solo trip to Gatlinburg and the park. Trying to avoid going up alone if I can but Im not skeered

Hiking up to Le Conte with group on Monday. After all the rain, is one trail better than another? We were thinking of going Boulevard . any advice.

@Elliott....going up the Boulevard is tough. The last mile or so gains a lot of elevation. Going up and down the Boulevard in one day would be a challenge as well.

One thing a lot of people do is go up Boulevard and down Alum Cave with a car shuttle. As far as rain is concerned, stream crossings aren't an issue on those two trails (and aren't normally on the other trails either, but were a problem for some people during the height of the rains).

Elliott, I hiked Boulevard up and back today, the only negative was a couple of areas of tall wet grass, my pants were soaked well above my knees. Adding to what IN Tony wrote, the return trip on Boulevard in my opinion is tougher than the hike up, but the A,T. section is easier on the way back. Good luck and happy Hiking.

I agree with you Larry O the Boulevard up isn't that bad except dealing with the grass. It does make for a long day hiking when you can't enjoy the beautiful views. I prefer it over Alum in the summer time because you don't have as many on the trail. Stay safe and enjoy your hike Elliott.

I like the Blvd/Alum combo. I did it as a day hike last year with a friend. But I'm a local so we dropped a car at Alum and started at Blvd.

Finally made it to the top today. Talked to Allyson on her way down. Her and Chris seem like really good folks. The hike was a little harder than I remember, but we made it. It was pretty socked in with clouds. No good views, but it was amazing watching the clouds blow by. All and all a good hike. On our way up a hiker past us and he was getting it pretty fast. When we got to Cliff Tops, first I asked him if his name was Steve d, he said no then I asked him how long it took him to make it to the top...1 hour 35 minutes and he was no young man.

Tony Ga, I was in the cafeteria from about 12:15 till 2:45. I wish I had know you were there. I did a round trip on the Boulevard.

We were on the trail before 7 this morning and was headed down by 12 noon. Had to make it back home for a "function". Did the clouds clear? This was a last minute decision to go. Was afraid to say we were going to hike cause it would probably had made it rain again.

Tony Ga, it was still cloudy when I left, glad you got to go. I love hiking to LeConte regardless of the weather.

my wife and I are planning on going up to LeConte on Sunday and hopefully the weather will cooperate....we have lived here for 6 years but have only gone as far as Alum Cave Bluff numerous times...tomorrow we will conquer the mountain.
