Knowing others is wisdom; Knowing the self is enlightenment. Mastering others requires force; Mastering the self needs strength. He who knows he has enough is rich. Perseverance is a sign of willpower. He who stays where he is endures. To die but not to perish is to be eternally present. Tao Te Ching _Morning,
It was a cold one yesterday! The high was only 11. The overnight low was -4! It was -4 and cloudy at observation. It was sunny and clear for the majority of the day, then developed into flurries in the late afternoon. There's about an inch of snow on the ground. It's soft fluffy stuff, but there is some ice underneath it on the trails - so be careful! As I type this in the allegedly heated kitchen, I see my breath creep ever upwards as I whistle to the radio. My hands are frigid like exoskeletons and I am wrapped cocoon-like in a wool blanket. It is starting to resemble the winter that was the drapery of my dreams in months of anticipation. This kind of cold is never something to be ignored, always provoking you and sending exhilarating shivers through to your core and rind. There is an eternal quality in this extreme weather. We are tied to past generations in these conditions, to prehistoric peoples who didn't take warmth and comfort for granted. It is a gift.

The true gift is to appreciate nature and its conservation at a young age. Many people live their whole lives and never truly recognize and appreciate the beauty around them. As always, love the picture and the post. Stay safe and try to keep warm!

It is a wonderful thing that we have you up there watching the mountain for us, and I imagine it is wonderful also, that the mountain is there watching you. Thank you for all that you do, and may all your efforts have blessings profoundly returned!

Had to come back to work today after being off for a week. Wishing I was up there in the snow and cold instead of this desk. Nice pic.

Jonathan - I hope you are very well prepared for what you are proposing to do? You also know that you cannot make a fire at LeConte shelter, correct? Those low of temps are dangerous and can be deadly to be out in overnight.

This is not my first trip to the mountain to stay overnight in january. Thank you for the concern but I'm super excited about staying out in the cold temps. I'll be joined by a triple crown hiker who has completed all 3 of the long distance trails in the us. Also well are there are no fires allowed

JP, i don't know if you have given any thought to returning next year or not. If you don't someone is going to have some mighty big shoes to fill. You have elevated the blog to a new level. Glad to see you finally got some of the winter you have waiting for. Thanks for all the great pics and words of wisdom. Reading your comments and those of all the respondents is the best part of my day. Be safe and keep warm.

JP, you are in a "thin" place, to be so blessed....... Is this the cabin you sleep in or did you take over Allison and Chris's room off the dining area. Don't mean to be nosey, just thought that would be nice and convienant for you with the kitchen being right there. You'd only have to heat one thing instead of two. Yes, always value the heat, the cold always comes. If we could only bottle the warmth when we have it. Stay warm!

This is deep and powerful stuff you're giving us, JP. It is restoring my soul to listen (and watch) you settle into your winter mind. Thanks for sharing your high and holy days with us all.

Regarding those unprepared hikers, I've encountered my share of them over the years and I've always been unable to understand how people can be so foolish; I cannot imagine starting out on even a short day hike without at least a minimum of preparation and gear; of course, one can get by with little or nothing in the way of gear and take chances, and survive; I'm not one of those; I simply believe that knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom; One can find it, live it, be fortified by it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it. Good preparation is my choice and for me it's wise to prepare.

I am excited to find your site and to follow it. I believe the solitude in which you are going to experience while embarking on such a beautiful Winter spiritul awakening. The ability to truly sit still in nature and listen to her is your gift, one that will be with you for the rest of your life. I envy you! Comments are closed.
