The Power Of The Sun

If you have wondered how we have power for the laptop I use for this blog, this should answer your questions. We have a block of solar panels that generate enough power to keep our cell phone, laptop, park radio, meat slicer, and other electronics charged. The solar panels track with the sun. It then sends the energy to a couple of gel batteries which holds the power. We charge all of our electronics off of the batteries. We also have a system for our water pump, incinerator, and our wood shed. The wood shed system allows us to use power tools for all of our building projects. Sorry to say, we are not as rustic as people might think we are. Thanks to the sun, we have a few luxuries.

Good info about the solar power but you failed to mention your rustic and time honored solar clothes dryer.

How many consecutive cloudy LeConte days will the batteries last through given normal usage?

Diane, the batteries can usually last up to about 3 days with normal usage. I am so used to going a week with no sun that I learn to start slowing down the usage after 2 days.

You mentioned you charge cell phone as well. You don't get any service up there, correct? I have been up a there a few times with my TMobile phone and I don't receive any signal.

I get service up there on my cell. Its alltel. But I have to plant myself in one spot up on the porch of the lodge and don't move. It spotty but I can get it.

We get great coverage with US Cellular. Verizon can also get a good signal.

On a side note, you will be having a Troop of Boy Scouts coming up tomorrow from Shepherdsville, KY. I have 2 boys in it. I have made that tripa couple times when I was playing Little League and the Huffs were in charge. I think they would be really interested in your power setup and the way the lodge operates. I am not sure if Bob(Scoutmaster) has set anything up or not. They are with Troop 868. They are day hiking and having lunch with you all.

How do you get Internet Service? I've always wondered that. :)
