The Rain and Fog are Back

9/12/2013

Picture
After five days laying on the beach and absorbing every bit of vitamin D I could manage, I am ready to take on this thick layer of fog and rain. Chris said they had perfect weather for the week I was gone. I guess that makes me the rain link. The hike up the mountain was gorgeous. As soon as I reached the top, I was smacked in the face by a wall of fog. The high yesterday reached 65º with a low of 50º. The warmer temperatures in the lower elevations are helping us hang on to some warmer temperatures up top. I did notice a lot of the mountain ash berries are out. Fall is just around the corner. It won't be long until the crew starts making their predictions for first snow.

Is the property still owned/managed by the Bush corporation?

Thanks
John

The lodge property is federal land, National Park Service, et al. It is operated through a concession by the Park Service. I'm sure there are things Stokely has to answer to and for regarding the lodge operation, etc.

I heard you all were soliciting folks about adventures in a LeConte T-shirt. I just returned from a 3-week trip all over Alaska. It was an incredible tour but the highlight was driving into Denali on a mostly cloudless day (rare up there) and seeing Mt. McKinley in all his glory from many miles away. The next morning, again on a beautiful partly cloudy day, we flew in and around that magnificent mountain and eventually landed on one of his many glaciers - at 9,000 ft.
I was proudly wearing my LeConte long-sleeved (it was cold up there) T-shirt.
That big old mountain up there has nothing on our little (relatively) old-er mountain down here.

Only have to get through Friday and Saturday and Sunday I'll be hiking up the mountain. Getting excited!

Debi in Michigan: I just returned from Michigan and walking the Mackinac bridge on Labor Day...me and about 40,000 others. Have you every done that? It was an awesome experience walking across that 5 mile span. Cold and windy but nevertheless an experience I'm glad I had. Good stretch of my legs for Sunday's hike.

Marilyn, No I never have walked it. All those crowds keep me away. lol I wish I could take a walk across it though. I'd pick a sunny day and just take a couple of people. Before cell phones what happens where your car breaks down. Hmmm, don't tempt me. Pretty cool bridge. I think my husband has worked on it before. He's construction so he's all over the place. It was really cold that day, we went kayacking the day before and played in the river and it was beautiful. The next day I think they flipped a switch and it was brr cold. I know my Grandma has walked it several times. She's now 93 so its been awhile. There's a restaurant in Mackinaw City that has a free little museum upstairs and you can see them building it. Pretty neat to go through. I'm about 4 hours from the bridge.
Allyson I sure hope enjoyed that nice weather while you were on vacation, lol. It tried to stay nice for you, you were just gone too long. :)
So, I talked it over with my husband last night and asked him if I should write a date down for a trip up next year and spend the night. Well, sure he says. The man who complains all the way up. But says, just tell them to make sure it don't rain this time. Gotta love that man!! I'm thinking I'll try for August. We still have to go while our son is in school. So in 2 years I'd really like to take a fall trip up. But for now, if I don't get in I will just take a day trip, but getting in forces us to go. Ha!

Good weather coming up according to the extended forecast. Usually that worries me, since they rarely get anything right that far ahead. But I'm optimistic right now. :)

Hitting the road early Sunday morning. I'm psyched!

Are you seeing any leaves change yet? We have a Fall Colors Tracker over at Blue Ridge Parkway Daily. Curious to know if you think you're "Patchy" (10-50% changed).

Hiked to the Lodge and High Point yesterday via Rainbow Falls and returned on the Trilliam Gap Trail. An enjoyable, but tiring trek.

If I was younger I'd parachute into the lodge wearing one of my lodge t-shirts !! I was wondering who designs them ?

I've waited anxiously all week. Saturday is going to be great weather to hike up the mountain. This will be my second hike up there this year.
