The View Never Grows Old

4/26/2013

"It doesn't matter how many times a mountain or rock face has been climbed, for each person it's a  new experience: an experience in which the outcome is never guaranteed." - S. Allison

Yesterday was a great day for climbing the mountain. The views were far and wide. Chris and I made our way out to Myrtle Point to soak up some rays. The high  yesterday was 44º so it was  a bit chilly, but sitting out on the rocks at Myrtle made for a perfect day. The sun felt great and recharged my internal battery. The low last night reached 26º. Winter is still hanging on. Remember, if you are spending the night in the shelter, make sure you have warm equipment. A blanket is not going to do the job. We had a hiker make the right decision yesterday when he realized how cold it was going to get. He turned around and hiked off the mountain. I give him a round of applause for listening to what we were telling him and realizing his gear would not make for a safe night in the shelter.

Today is starting out the same. Beautiful blue skies and a chill in the air. It is currently 34º but the sun is shining and I am sure it will warm up quickly.

Good Morning LeConte! Thanks to all the staff for all you do. See you all in July for an overnight, and maybe sooner for a day hike!! Have a glorious day!

Your title for today's post sums it up pretty well. Looking at Newfound Gap in your photo is different for each individual as spokne of in your excellent quote. I'm hiking up late Monday afternoon and staying at the shelter, then on over to the A.T. for a few miles.

I hiked up Alum yesterday and talked with several first timers, I'm sure most of them will be back. My wife and I are planning on going up tomorrow if the rain doesn't make her back out.

Good eye Doug. But the mountain man you are, you know all of your mountains and actually know what to look for. Have fun hiking. Beautiful picture today Allyson.

Thank you for your kind comments Debi. I appreciate them. Every day when I come here I look for your remarks and observations. I enjoy them. Yes, sometimes I get philosophical and get carried away with my writing, but that's because I love to share with others. Yet, I have been called some names and accused of things that are totally untrue. Ok, people have the right to their opinions, even if they're wrong. I'm not quite a hard-core mountain man. That description made me smile. I do have years of experience but I've never sought to gain fame or glory from it, only to share with others. So, Debi, has it warmed up for you there !? It's getting better around here, although a wee bit slowly. I hope it's a pretty day Monday as I'm hiking up and staying at the shelter above the lodge late that afternoon, then early the next day my route will take me over to the A.T. and to the northeast. Have a good day my friend.

I thought last night about dark, "I hope they take a picture of the full moon low in the sky and put it on the site." Too bad.... Maybe tonight it will be clear enough to try. It looked awesome last night, and I know it looked even bigger up on top of the mountain.

Jon, I was hoping to see a picture of the full moon from last night or early this morning it was beautiful. I love the picture today and thanks for posting Allyson.

Good morning from sunny (but flat) Florida! Love the sand and sun but nothing can compete with the glorious mountains. Love love love the photo! I'm counting the days till we get to have the thrill of hiking to Leconte... May 28!

Hiked to Charlies Bunion today from Newfound Gap. I am so happy that 441 has been repaired and we can finally hike up in the higher elevations. The views were spectacular. Seeing Mt. LeConte off to our left is really making me excited for our overnite next month. We will probably do a day hike up Alum before then. Would going up Boulevard and down Alum as a day hike too long and far? How long would that take for the average hiker. (It generally takes us 3-1/2 hours to go up Alum Cave.

We day hiked "up" the Boulevard and down Alum last year and it is my favorite hike to LeConte so far. We started early in the morning and spent some time up top and were down well before dark. Not going to lie we were tired, but we had smiles on our faces when we finished. Great day hike.

Steve D: I want to hike the A.T. all the way up to Davenport Gap and thought a good start might be from the shelter above the lodge. I haven't decided where to start from; perhaps Rainbow Falls trailhead or Trillium, which is my favorite trail. But I could change my plans and begin from Newfound Gap which would eliminate staying at that shelter; I'm sorry that I don't know definitely this evening - - I'm having trouble getting in contact with the person who usually ferries me, etc. I'll have to be picked up at Davenport as leaving a vehicle there is rather risky, it being a rather remote location. I'll post something by sometime Sunday. I even thought about using the Brushy Mtn. route up for a change. Decisions, decisions, decisions ! When I hike all the A.T. through the Park I have always started at Davenport so I want to go in the opposite direction this time, but I'll be doing half of it. Good evening.
