Time For a Visit To the Land of Plenty

4/13/2014

It is going to be a great day for a hike. I am finally going down to the land below after a month of mountain life. It will be nice to see what spring looks like. I hear there are some amazing wild flowers below. I am looking forward to seeing them. I just found out we are expecting more snow on Tuesday. Sounds like winter is hanging on by a thread. Of course, as we all know, weather forecasts can change over the next two days. It is best to be prepared. The high yesterday was 62º with a low of 35º. It was a pleasant day around the lodge.

I get people asking me all the time about cancellations. I will share the secret to catching a cancellation. We have  a Twitter account, https://twitter.com/LeConteLodge. If you follow us on Twitter, we post dates that are open. They go pretty fast which is why they don't make it on this site. So, if you are interested, check out our page and "follow" us and you will find out about cancellations. Good luck and hope to see you on the mountain.

I know you all will enjoy Nathan's musings. He is a man of many talents and story telling is one of them. We will be back on Wednesday, rested and relaxed.

Thanks for the Twitter tip. There are 5 of us turning 50 this year at work and we tried to get a night at the lodge but to no avail. I'll see if any of them 'tweet'!

Thanks for the information Allyson. That might come in handy. I'm tent camping at Elkmont later this coming week and am prepared to deal with a bit of snow !

what a treat to get to go to Grotto Falls the SHORT way, today!! Great hike! I also saw the Llama mobile in the parking lot, so you must have gotten a special delivery today (SUN)! good for you (and the Llamas!) Before my hike to grotto with my daughter, I was able to go out this morning and deliver "trail magic" to thru hikers coming off of Mt Collins. Their stories were wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed my day, as I dropped a few in Gatlinburg for the night (I warned them that mon eve was going to be rough out there on the AT) Best of luck to all 2014 AT thru hikers and to Mt LeConte day/overnighters!! Enjoy the beauty of the Smoky Mts!

We will be up on the mountain on Wednesday, spending the night in the shelter, but will venture over to the lodge to say hello! This will be my 8 year old daughters first trek up LeConte - she has been waiting to com up with me. My son is 12 and this is his second trip up. It is my 56th hike up there..... We are from Ohio, so we dont get down there as often as I would like.

It looks like it is going to be a chilly one on Tuesday night when we are on Icewater - so we will enjoy some morning snow and ice and hope the sun melts it all quickly!

Looking forward to a nice trip up and then going down Alum on Thursday....

Elizabeth have you ever met the llamas coming down from the Lodge when you were going up?? We tried that April,2013 but never saw any tracks and it started to rain so we turned around and back to the SUV.We were hoping to meet them and get some pictures but we heard later they had eaten something that made them sick and didn't go that wednesday.

I have not seen them enroute. I saw them loading once and have seen the truck several times. Usually I am only going as far as Grotto or Brushy mt and I turn before they make it to that point (on their way down). I am excited to see/meet them this year and will try harder to plan my hikes for the right times! I hear they get to the top between 11 and noon and stay for their lunch, then head down. Don't know if these times are right. There was plenty of fresh droppings on the trail on Sunday, however! smile. Trillium is my fave trail, with Alum close behind!!!!
