Here are the latest trail updates.
Rainbow, Bullhead, and Trillium will be closed until March 27th. The road to Rainbow and Bullhead will be open Saturday, March 27th. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail leading to the Grotto Falls trailhead will be closed until May. Boulevard has not been cleared of blow downs and there is quite a bit of snow on the ground. It is highly recommended to not hike out Boulevard. Alum Cave Trail is the only trail that is passable at the time. Please check back on the National Park website or Leconte Lodge website for further updates.

Just sitting here wondering if the airlift was underway; One of these years I must participate in it; I'd love to spend one season as a crew member, or as the winter caretaker, just for the experience. Next winter I'll at least make a hike up with snow on; Would love to see the lodge area back in the '20's, or earlier; G'Day.

Things slow here at the office, so my mind, as usual, wanders to the Smokies; I was wondering about Alum Cave Trail and just where approximately the snow began, assuming that at the lower elevations it's even melted. I believe the elevation at the parking lot by Rt 441 is around 3700 ft; ought to bring my GPS unit when I come in a couple of weeks, but it'd just be extra weight. have my clip-on ice cleats ready just in case; hope the airlift got underway.

I AM day hiking up the first week in April just to check on John N. Hope I can make it?! I'll definitely use Alum Cave. I also have the "Stablicers" which I didn't have when John's Dad & I came up Boulevard in knee high to waist deep snow, etc. several years ago. Comments are closed.
