Trail Warning

7/22/2013

Picture
The rain stopped just in time for the crew to celebrate the half way point of the season. We call it mid-season. We usually celebrate with a progressive dinner. It is always fun to see what culinary delights the crew can come up with. The above picture is Matt grilling his famous "Oopsies". They consist of maraschino cherries and bacon on a skewer and then grilled. I know, I know, it sounds a bit odd. I will say, they were delicious. We were all pleasantly surprised. The crew did an amazing job and fun was had by one and all.

Yesterday was a bit of a mess weather wise. The high was 64º with a low of 58º. We received 1.38" of rain yesterday.

         Trail Warning

With all of the rain we have been having and the rain that is in the forecast, I am going to suggest that hikers do not use Rainbow Falls trail. Apparently, one of the stream crossings above the falls has shifted and it diverts the water in way that makes it impassable when we get heavy rainfall. Until something can be done, we are suggesting people to stay off of Rainbow Falls trail.

Good Morning All,

Jenna and I were there last Monday and would like to say Thank You to Nathan, Chrissy and all the Crew. We enjoyed ourselves, the wonderful hikers, the sunset and sunrise. As we've said before we wish we lived closer to the Smokies.
The highlight was meeting the llama's. Jenna loved feeding biscuits and pancakes to the llama's. However, one of them (I think Pete) doesn't like pancakes. He loves banana peels! We happened to have a couple of those and gave it to him. Jenna was tickled to finally meet them and to able to feed them!
Allyson and Chris - it was wonderful to meet you on the trail. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Susan B, I enjoyed talking with you and watching Jenna feed the llama's. Since we both saw a bear on the way up I thought you might be interested to know that I saw one on the way down. You mentioned Nathan and Crissy, you won't meet two nicer people on or off the mountain.

Hi Larry!

It was wonderful to meet you. Interesting that the bear was still around - we were too busy chatting on the way down to even notice. Ok - it's a girl thing! I truly enjoyed our time there at the lodge - always so hard to leave. Have a wonderful day!

Allyson, what are the odds that there is a 2010 t-shirt somewhere? That is the first year I came up and stupid me didn't buy one.

Brian N bama, I remember one of the years I hiked up there was a whole tub full of t-shirts but I didn't really look at them since I have ones for all the years I have hiked up (even took some and made a quilt) so I don't know if they were just the previous year or more than one previous year. Be interesting to see if Allyson has any more info. I know I've seen shirts with LeConte on them down below in G-burg but its just not the same as hiking up and getting the one true original one. Good luck with your quest.

Marilyn, I have gotten some of those shirts out of the tub. It is the previous year. Went through the whole tub in May. LOL Not sure why I didn't get one in 2010, my son has one. I must have had brian hiccup. Oh well, It is one of my favorite designs too. : (

Brian, if it makes you feel any better I don't have a 2010 shirt either. that was the year that my daughter and her husband made the trip and I stayed home and babysat the grandkids. She's the one who crewed up there in '96 and she made the reservations then that we have every year so I guess I had to bow to her wishes since she and her husband are military and in some foreign country most of the time. I am remedying that this year....I'm coming up and bringing them plus the 2 grandkids along so I won't miss this year's shirt. Can't wait til September!
