Very Icy Up Top

11/17/2010

Chris and I had a great hike up the mountain. The weather is beautiful. Alum Cave trail was in great shape until the very top. We reached ice on the last quarter of a mile to the top. We had our "Stabilicers" ( ice walkers ) on for the last part of the trail. The temperature up top is a warm 31 degrees. There is about an inch of fresh snow on the ground. The sun is helping to melt some of it. I am sure it will refreeze tonight. The forecast is calling for more snow tomorrow night.

For those of you who emailed me wanting to know about our race, here are the results. We did run the Chichamauga Battlefield Marathon in Georgia. Chris ran his first full in 5:44. I ran my first half in 3:08. It is safe to say we are hooked. We have signed up for another half in February and my first full marathon in April. We did train on the mountain. I will say that training at 6500 feet is great. The small section of trail we ran was not so great. If you hiked up this summer and witnessed two fools running back and forth, now you know what we were training for.

We are still planning on coming up the day after Thanksgiving. Our plans are to go up Alum and come down the Boulevard the same day. Do you know how the trail is right now on the Boulevard?

Donna, I can tell you that I had two park volunteers hike out Boulevard about a week ago. They said the trail was extremely icy and that it would probably be like that until spring. That trail does not get much sun exposure. There are sections up top that are very sketchy. If you have crampons or some form of ice walker, you will probably be ok depending on your hiking experience.

Some friends and I were hoping to hike Alum Cave this weekend. What is the weather looking like for the weekend? I can't seem to find any websites that can tell me. Thanks!

My husband and I (and a few friends) are hiking up Alum Cave in the morning. So maybe we will get to meet you while we are there....
Thanks for always keeping us updated on the conditions on Mt. Leconte..
Can't wait to get started..

Congratulations on your races!! I do a lot of running events myself (lots of half marathons with the occasional full marathon thrown in for fun) and I can only imagine the logistical challenges of training up there! The altitude and hills definitely work in your favor, but just getting in the pure mileage you need has to be difficult. You guys did great! And beware, race events ARE habit-forming ... :-)

Allison,
If we are able to hike up Alum Cave the day after Thanksgiving, do you think it would be better to come back down Trillium than the Boulevard. We have friends going with us so we will have a shuttle. I have done all the trails but my husband hasn't and it would be a good time since we have friends going for him to get another trail in. Thanks, Donna
