I thought I would bring your eyes a little lower today. I decided to take a break from the glorious vistas and share some views of the ground that we walk on. I found this form of peat moss to be very interesting. I love how intricate it is even at a very small scale. One activity I love is finding a patch of moss and testing it for sponginess. Some moss is so thick, you just sink right into it. I call it nature's memory foam mattress. I am always on the look out for a great patch to take a nap on. Yesterday was another great day for watching the clouds roll by. The high was 65 with a low of 48.

Allyson, I'm glad to hear of someone else that likes to nap on a patch of moss. I have to be careful, though, to find one that isn't too damp ! Love your closeup photos; Closeups used to be one of my favorites when I was more into photography. The sky here yesterday presented some unusual formations, rolling, boiling sort of dark gray clouds. Took a couple of photos to send to a friend. Have a great day up there today !

Tilman, Welcome! You are in for an enjoyable fall and winter reading the daily postings. You will be highly entertained when JP the winter caretaker takes over! He has a great talent for writing and sharing winter up top with everyone. Enjoy!!

Completed six day trips to the lodge this year and enjoyed each one. Will probably try one more before they close for the season. My first hike in 2009 was prompted by reading material regarding Alum Cave.

Tony Ga expressed it exactly the way it overcame me. As I've said, I've hked the Smokies for many years, but the first time I stayed at the lodge was only 8yrs ago and I was hooked completely by the place ! I'd go up every week if I could. Comments are closed.
