Caught this little guy hanging out in camp. I think I startled him when I came down the hill. I sure am grateful the deer like to eat the grass around camp. The rain makes it hard to weed eat. The forecast sounds like summer is heading back around. I guess we are in for a warming trend. I wonder if that means drier conditions? The high yesterday was 63º with a low of 51º. It sounds as though we may be heading back into the seventies for the weekend. Could make for a great Labor Day weekend.

Its about time you finally got some summer. I have watching a fawn with its mama here grow up out in the field next door. When it was born it wasn't much bigger than my cat. They do grow up fast.

We're making an attempt to visit you guys this Sunday, hope the rain holds off this weekend! Can anyone tell me how the approach from Rainbow Falls has been? Any issues?

I came down Rainbow last week in the rain and there was very little water in any of the creek crossings.

It's always a treat to see the wildlife around the lodge, or anywhere in the Park for that matter. Depending on where one is within the boundaries there are usually several varieties of creatures to be observed and a lot of tourists visit there to see bears. I like seeing them, too, and I've encountered them plenty of times, some quite closely, too ! LIke riding the loop at Cades Cove on one of my bicycles - - there are often opportunites to see bears there, and almost always deer. I try not to add to any traffic jams and snarls when bears are spotted, though, because there are usually enough people trying to feed them and, of course, that's not the right thing to do, but people cannot be stopped it seems from this activity. I can't recall seeing a bear while at the lodge, although I read the reports of them when they are seen; I've run into three or four while hiking Trillium this year, none too closely however, but always nice to spot them. When deer are frequentinig the lodge area it always adds to the peacefulness of the place it seems. I was relaxing on the porch of cabin nine one afternoon a few years back when a small deer juist walked up rather close to me; I sat as still as possible and enjoyed its compnay for a few minutes at least. Rain.....I just never get overly concerned about it, perhaps because I've always managed to hike in it without much discomfort. As I tell people, it's simply a matter of how well one is prepared for it, equipment-wise and, of course, mentally. I'm not really hard-core nor stupid for when a deluge comes down, however, I'm looking for the nearest shelter as much as the next person ! I think that tomorrow I'll make it into the Park for a good day hike, going from the Smoky Mtn. Institute at Tremont over to Elkmont campground, roughly 12.5 miles. I've found three properties in Gatlinburg I'm very much interested in and will be looking at those. Once I get my own place there, well, I may not be in them often because being so close to the Park will occupy me most of the time !! Boots on the ground, friends, boots on the ground !!! G'day

As the rangers say "feed a bear, you kill a bear" the sooner the stupid tourist realize this the better

Thanks Mary for the information. I can certainly meet your group at the trailhead whenever you're hiking near Gatlinburg. Just let me know when you'll be hiking in that area. Comments are closed.
