Morning y'all, It's a beautiful, blustery morning up top. The high yesterday reached 36 degrees. The overnight low was 18 degrees. It was 34 degrees and mostly cloudy at 7am observation. There is about 8 inches of snow remaining. There has been plenty of melt on the mountain and the trails are sure to be sloppy. Get out and enjoy the day!

Beautiful sunrise! I miss LeConte. "What I wish what I was made of isn't what I am. But we can, we can pretend." I loved that quote. I believe your title words generally come from songs, and I don't recognize where that one came from, but that doesn't matter. OK, I'm going into deep contemplation mode here, so bear with me (or just move on to another comment). That is the story of my life. My imagination has always gone further than my capabilities, and the gap between the two has always challenged me. When I was 18, I thought I should be able to hitchhike across Europe. The idea actually scared me to death, but I pretended I was the kind of person who would do that, and... I actually did it. Same thing with a lot of scary hiking adventures. I pretended that I was the kind of person who could do that sort of thing. And then I did it. None of these things came naturally. Okay, end of introspection session. I hiked up via the Rainbow Falls trail yesterday, started around 9 AM. I started with microspikes pretty much right out of the gate, slush, ice, and a little snow up to Rainbow Falls. From Rainbow Falls up, there were some spots of clear trail intermixed with a little deeper packed snow. About 2 mils from the summit, it was all packed snow to the top. I saw one other party of two up there who were well prepared for the trip. I would certainly recommend microspikes and full leather waterproof boots (the lightweight "membrane" boots that people like today will get soaked in no time). There was significant melt on the trail by the time I got down; in fact the trail all the way to Rainbow Falls was mainly mud and slush by 3 PM. Comments are closed.
