Glad you are safe, JP and that the Lodge and outbuildings are safe as well.

The wildfires are terrible, and knowing that JP is safe is my good news. Hoping that JP will post soon.

Hard to believe all that has happened up there in a single week. LeConte, Elkmont, Gatlinburg and all of the Smokies are a place I've cherished since I was a little boy. It's where I've always gained peace and renourishment and perspective in life; and always will. Hearts and prayers to the families who lost homes or loved ones...

Maybe there's a lesson here. Let's cherish what we have, Nothing is forever.

I agree Doug, when I was little, 55 yrs ago, the Chimney Tops picnic area was a campground, so I always go there every time I'm in the Smokies, sit on the rocks in the stream and revisit the exact campsite which is now a picnic area. So sorry for loss of life and Forrest and property recently. We were at Mt Leconte October 1 this year. So glad all is safe there.

Been enjoying the Chimney Tops picnic area since I was kid. It is now going on 40 years that I have been visiting the Smokies. Hope to relocate here from Texas when the time comes. Was wondering if the picnic area survived the fire? Get well soon my beloved mountains.

JP will be back as soon as the park reopens. At this point we have not received word on when that will be.

So glad JP is safe and the Lodge didn't burn. Sad for the folks in Gatlinburg. Praying...

Wondering if the helicopters were dropping water on the Chimney Top fire as soon as they learned of it? If not were they doing that THREE DAYS before the fire in Gatlinburg. Clearly by watching the weather channel it should have been known that strong winds out of the South Southeast were coming with the front. From a geographical standpoint, it should have been clear with strong winds from the SSE where the fire was going to go. I know we can't undo what has been done, but we can surly learn from it. What a shame.
