Winter Has Definitely Arrived

10/11/2012

Well, it is definitely winter on the mountain. The leaves on the mountain ash trees have fallen, the snake root has gone to seed, and I seem to be living in my down jacket. The low last night was 25 degrees! I am not ready for that. The high was 40. Today is starting out to be a beauty. The clouds have gone and left us with a view of the valley. These are the nights when it is clear and freezing that we have seen the aurora borealis. It is usually very faint, but the northern lights non the less. I will keep my eyes peeled to the night sky in hopes of a glimps of the amazing show. I hope everyone is enjoying the fall display in the lower elevations. It seems to be a good one this year.

So beautiful. I love it on the mountain. They are saying it will be "like spring" here in central Illinois for several days. Perhaps some of that weather will find its way to you.

Cool in Richmond, KY. 31 this morning and 33 yesterday. However, our high today should be in the mid 60's. On the bright side, perhaps the snakes are gone until spring.

Nadine, what part of central Illinois are you from? I too am from there...Peoria area.

I'm from Morton. Wish I could go down every year. Going next year in September. I got a reservation up top around my birthday.

Winter without snow. My kind of winter!! I think its waiting to snow until Brian comes down in November.
Cold and blustery day in Michigan. Snow in the UP, where my sled dogs are I care for in the summer. But no snow on the west side of the state in the lower. But that wind will blow you away today. No leaves in my yard, lol.

The Aurora Borealis, eh !? Now that interests me a great deal, enough so that now I will want to come up just for the chance of seeing that. I understand seeing it, say, in Alaska, but this far south I was unaware that that possibility existed, but it must be a grand sight to witness even if it is faint ! I love the fall for the clear, crisp skies when star-gazing is good. The lodge would be a very prime location for a decent telescope; that'd be a beneficial addition to have, but I wouldn't want to be the one to transport a sizable scope up there ! It's an amusing thing that here in central KY I love it when it snows, especially a sizable accumulation, but we've not had much of it for a season or so. I suppose that if I lived up in Michigan like Debi my attitude toward it might be the same as hers. Yes, the colors this fall seem to be quite excellent and I'm enjoying them immensely. Sure would be nice to be sitting at the lodge sipping on cups of hot cocoa !

I find my best ideas come to me while I am in the tub, sipping on a cup of cocoa.

Can't wait to find out how today goes. After looking at the radar, I'm thinking SNOW!
