Winter Plans

7/23/2013

The sun is trying to peek out from behind the clouds this morning. We had a soggy evening yesterday. Our high was 64º with a low of 54º and a little under 1/2" of rain. You know it has been a wet year when the crew got excited to see a forecast of partly sunny for the next week. I think we are due a few beautiful days to recharge our souls. Other than the wet season, we are plugging along. The end of season countdown has started. The crew is starting to discuss their winter plans. It is always exciting to have a trip to look forward to. Chris and I are joining Beau and Courtney for a trip to Hawaii. We are planning on two weeks of tent camping and hiking. It will be during their rainy season, so I joke that this season is getting us prepared. For some reason, they don't think that is funny. Chris is extremely excited about this trip. This will knock off his last state to visit. After this trip, he can boast he has been to all 50 states. I, personally, will be looking forward to a hammock on a beach.

I sure hope JP will be the returning to the Mtn. this winter. He is a wonderful guy in some many ways. I can't believe the half way mark is here. I would so be looking foward to the Hawaii trip. You guys have done a wonderful job this summer-as always though. Not a day goes by that I don't check the blog. It is so heplful for us hikers.

We were part of the group who waited out the rockslide in order to hike Alum Cave trail . . . well worth the wait; got on the trail a little before 11:00. We saw some of the beautiful bee balm you had pictured a couple of days ago and still lots of rhododendrum. Also saw a mamma bear with her cub around the bluff area. We had a wonderful visit up top and so much appreciate the helpfulness and friendliness of the crew!!

Rain, rain, rain. Every day it seems. I do enjoy it, though. There have been times when my best day hikes, or even long hikes, were done in the rain. Of course, a deluge isn't exactly on my list. Yes, there are rare times when a day or so at a beach is most appealing, but with my luck the sand would really bother me. Give me a hike any day, As they say in France: "La randonnee est un compromis entre ce que votre ego veut vous faire, quelle experience vous indique de le faire, et ce que vos nerfs vous laissera faire !"

{Hiking is a compromise between what your ego wants you to do, what experience tells you to do, and what your nerves will let you do.}

Mid-point of the lodge season already ! I'd love to be up there this very moment, as usual. I'd never look forward to its end until the end was only a day or two away. I was in Gatlinburg [Pancake Pantry is still my favorite] this past Saturday and Mt. Leconte was beautifully shrouded in fog and clouds ! Just in and out of town however. Sure would have liked to have trekked up the mountain !

Pretty good, I live in Ludington, Michigan and we have miles and miles of beach here. I finally got there yesterday. I do hate sand!! I walked 4 miles splashing through the waves. Let me tell you, I needed some cushions for these feet. I was sore this morning. Feet and hips. I can walk up Alum and I wasn't that sore at all. I should do that more often, even the dog got a good work out. I think I will have to wear my hiking boots though. What a sight splashing through the water with my purple Ahnu's. Yeah, Hawaii sounds like a great time Allyson, even in the rainy season.

You are a smart woman Allison...
Will you and Chris be there on the 11th of August? We need to come and do some work on the shelter. See ya soon.

You should check out Wianappapa State Park on Maui. Very remote and they have very cool rustic cabins for $35 a night. Get on it soon. They fill up much like LeConte!
