Winter Wonderland

10/20/2011

Well I wish I hadn't been right about this: we got snow!  It is a beautiful morning atop this socked in mountain.  Starting yesterday afternoon, we accumulated about 1" of snow.  It is blustery and only 24 degrees right now.  Up here, we do not have ice, just snow but some of the heavily traveled areas have been compacted and are starting to get slick.  Be prepared for cold temperatures and if you have any ice walkers you may want to bring them.  Be sure to drink plenty of water coming up.  Even when it is this cold outside you can become dehydrated quickly.  Be safe and we look forward to seeing you up here!

so we are thinking of coming up by Alum Cave Bluff Sat morning and hiking back down that afternoon. Is this reasonable just for normal leisure hikers, with tennis shoes or hiking boots with these conditions? was just up there about a month ago:) also, what would you suggest wearing?

Beautiful! Jealous of the snow up here in Cincinnati (at least I am, I'm sure 99% of Cincinnati is not).

I love your website. I come here when I get homesick. I sure do miss those appalachian mountains. Thanks for your posts!

Husband and i are coming up on the 25th. don't know what's worse the bear or the snow even though both are beautiful sites. Everyday the new posts are exciting to us and it makes us only want to hike sooner. Can't wait to get up there.

I have a couple buddies from Nashville who started their trek up your beautiful mountain (I did it last year and am intensely jealous I'm not with them) this morning. One of them said "it might be a little wet". Think they're in for a big surprise?

Do the Llamas run even when there is snow on the ground? What time to they leave the parking lot in the morning?

Hello everyone! We are having problems with the website not letting me post today. I will continue to work on it. It is almost 30 now and should continue to warm slightly over the weekend. If hiking this weekend, bring layers (fleece, rain jacket, long sleeves). You may be hot hiking but cool down some once you get up here. The snow is melting some. Shoes (boots or tennis shoes) with good traction would probably be ok for hiking.

WOW - my son Joe and I enjoyed a tremendous time on the Mountain! The staff was awesome, the food outstanding, and the heaters/coffee critically important! :) Folks heed the warnings - plenty of water, layers of warmth and keep a great spirit! Cheers!

Hiked up on this day..started Alum Cave trail around 1:30(late start). Hung out atop for a little bit. It was so beautiful! Then went down Bullhead trail. Made it to the parking area around 11pm. Just wanted to post so anyone up top who may be wondering..the 3 crazy ladies made it down....all in 1 piece.

Did anyone find a Swiss army knife with the initials REM on it the day of Monday 10/17? It would have been in the lodge or one of the cabins near it.
