As Horace Kephart said, it's good to be alive...
Morning folks,

It looks like yet another beautiful day atop LeConte. The sun has started to show through the clear skies quite definitively after a milky mixture of reds, oranges, purples, and every fine palette in between for 'sunrise'. It was more of an evocation than a pure rise, as the clouds suggestively picked up hints of the sun's glow throughout the 30 minute performance. It's good to be back...

Yesterday's high was 40 degrees. The overnight low was 29 degrees. The mountain received no new precip and it looks as though we'll have good weather for the holiday weekend. The trails are still a bit icy up top, so be prepared to slide around a little.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! It goes without saying that I have much to be thankful for this year...

Bittersweet goodbye to Allyson, Chris and the crew and a thanks for all they do and have done for all the hikers to LeConte and the non hikers by the daily posts. Look forward to Sept 2013 for my annual overnighter. Best to the crew as they spend their off-season doing whatever it is they have planned. Have safe trip up Kilamanjaro, take lots of pics and please share. I know we'll all look forward to the experience through your eyes.

JP, welcome back. Looking forward to your pics and words of wisdom over the winter to soothe the LeConte soul each day.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all and to all the LeConte groupies who follow this blog.

JP, it looks like you're sitting in some kind of holding cell in a far off country or maybe refurbishing an old barn/warehouse?

I made my first hike to Mt. LeConte Lodge on Monday, November 19, 2012. I had a very difficult time with the hike, but I made it! My Uncle Randy first introduced the mountain to our family after he hiked it and then took my son, Landon, with him on several hikes. Randy died in February of brain cancer and it was Landon's idea to hike the mountain as a family. I came with Landon and his wife, our daughter Anna and her friend, Daniel, and my husband Mitch. I hiked the mountain in his memory and I am so glad I did. Randy loved the outdoors and he was so right about the mountain. It is a beautiful and unique experience. Thanks to the staff for a wonderful evening on Mt. Leconte. My family and I enjoyed our stay.

Darla, a wonderful story and family adventure. Thanks for sharing! I hiked LeConte three times in the 80's with my dad. After he passed on in 2008 it was my resolve to return to the mountain where we shared great memories. Out of shape and out of breath, it was those memories that kept me going up the trail to enjoy another sunset that was as beautiful as my mind had recalled. Since then I have been smarter about my training and have returned three more times, this past summer with two of my daughters and my brother.
May your family continue to be inspired by his memory and that of these great adventures.
