Yipee!!! Another Sunny Day

7/26/2013

I love the moment when you realize the clouds have lifted and the sun is out for a second day in a row. I awoke to a blanket of clouds this morning. As I was walking through the dining room, a.k.a. my commute to work, I saw that magnificent glow coming through the window. After looking at the forecast we are mentally prepared for rain for the next week. Yesterday was amazing. The crew scattered all over the mountain trying to find that perfect sunny spot. I found mine and soaked up some vitamin D. The day hikers were out in full force. Everyone was trying to capture that perfect day.

Thanks to everyone who commented on Dolly. I think the comment about her having low self esteem was spot on. That is pretty much the conclusion we came too. As for the crew being old enough to know The Waltons, there are a few of us who used to watch it on prime time television. In the 70s, the LeConte crew would make a night of it. They would put the little tv on The Waltons and make popcorn and sit and watch it.

Oh yeah, one last note of importance. Congratulations to Chris for scoring the highest Yahtzee score this season. The crew was in awe of his score of 530.

I sometimes wonder which part of the day I enjoy the most, morning or evening, and, of course, that depends on where I'm enjoying it. Just about every single time I've stayed at the lodge I've gotten up very early and either went out to Myrtle Point or up to Cliff Tops or simply walked around the lodge grounds, often finding a place to sit and take it all in. Marvelous. Peaceful. Relatively solitary. It certainly is a location where one can soak up the surroundngs ! But when I'm not there, I am blessed to have a wonderful home and sitting on my own back porch is right up there in enjoyment with "the mountain", which I was doing until a few minutes ago. Watching the squirrels, rabbits, birds, and this mornng a small cointingencvy of wild turkeys in the hayfield below is very nice. From the vantage point of the back porch there are no houses in sight thankfully and it's a most pleasant spot to be each morning. One thing I wish would come into the yard, however, would be a black bear ! Found some scat last year, but since there has been no other evidence of one; but I know they're around. So, it promises to be another beautiful day and I can only shut my eyes and imagine what it'll be like on Mt. Leconte ! Enjoy. Enjoy.

I enjoy your posts, Doug Y. As I read, I felt I was sitting on your porch and enjoying that view. From my porch we can view black bears. I am so enamored of these smart animals and serve on our local Bear task force trying to keep them wild and safe. The creator has given us so much beauty to marvel. I hope you will get to do that from your porch one day.

Love that picture, screen saver for the day. Love that feeling when you wake up in the morn and have the whole place to yourself before everyone else comes alive.

Sorry for the no reply, I don't have internet at home. As far as our hike, davenport gap to newfound gap. Just doing half thru the park this time. Fall break is always with us as we homeschool our kids. We can up and leave at any time which is great.

That's ok Brian, got info from Doug. Awesome that you homeschool!! I had always wanted to do that, but boy what a challenge.

I am heading to GSMNP August 10th and am hoping for little rain so that my husband, son, and I can enjoy time leisurely exploring several trails throughout the park.
Eventually, we plan to make it to Mt. LeConte, but that will have to be when my son is a little older. Thank you for sharing your daily thoughts, experiences, and pictures. Very enjoyable to view.
Take Care.

Yeah, that's quite a remarkable Yahtzee score. Some years ago I achieved a 500 + score and I think it took three Yahtzees. The odds of that happening are pretty slim, I'm sure.

I am staying in a Chalet directly across from the Lodge on the top of Cove Mountain. The sunrise looking at LeConte was perfect this morning, I was happy for you. Then the afternoon thunderstorm hit, and there was some impressive lightning strikes, one we caught on camera. We are planning a day hike up in a few days, maybe I can show you the picture.
