The finest souls are those that have the most variety and suppleness. Montaigne
Morning y'all,

It's a beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 41 degrees. The overnight low was 27 degrees. It was 41 degrees and clear at 7am observation. There was plenty of sunshine yesterday, so the trails have a bit of melt and only 3 inches of snow remains up top. There's more sun in the forecast, so expect unseasonably warm conditions and sloshy trails. It should be a great day to get out, enjoy!

PS: Thanks to Stephen for the NY Times! My first of the season, I'm sure to savor it today on a cabin porch!

Brian: I sent the link you posted of John Northrup's photography to a friend of mine who lives in a place called Summit Township, Michigan and he replied that he really liked those photos. Thanks

Who do you know who lives in Summit township Doug? I'm only 10 miles from there. In fact I used to work at Summit school when it was open. Just being nosey. I haven't commented much. I did everyday, but there was just too much hoopla I didn't like. But I do read every day and enjoy everyone's post.

HOLY COW....Rainbow Falls trailhead was PACKED today! Probably due to YOUR great blog! The main lot and the overflow was full when I got done (empty at 8 AM save for a rogue car). I only passed TWO people on the connector and Grotto hike I did, so that means they all went to Rainbow (or bullhead). I got some amazing pics and video of still frozen grotto, hope others got some of rainbow! GREAT day to hike!! Thanks for inspiring me to go to Grotto in the winter, it was my fave hike to date (tied with Hanging Lake in Colorado!). Thanks JP! Have a great weekend all !

Hi Debi: Yes, I've noticed that you've not said much lately, and I certainly don't blame you. I agree about all the "hoopla" and I've tried to reduce the number of times that I post and their lengths. I'm guilty of feeling like answering every negative remark I see, especially when they're directed at me. However, another reader here reminded me that the best course of action is to ignore those derogatory comments, and he's absolutely right. It's hard for me to do, but I'm following good advice. My friend in Summit Township is one that I did a lot of hiking with in the 1970's and 1980's. He's a bit of a recluse and I don't hear from him too often, but he's still kicking. He's relocating to Florida this spring because of health concerns. I'll be hopefully acquiring a "second home" sometime this spring somewhere as near to the Smokies as I can get; (they won't let me live withjn the Park !) I'm taking a hike this coming week, Tuesday or Wednesday I think, and will be visiting the Cosby to look a two small cottage-type places (they're about as big as I'll need) and probably tow or three others elsewhere close to the Park. I think it'll be great to at least have place to "operate from" over there, sort of my "base" for all my hike ! I sure have enjoyed the winter photos of the lodge lately, too. Good evening.

Great Day in the Morning ! I simply must proofread my comments more often ! My typing above was pitiful. Maybe I overly "spiked" that hot chocolate I just had; {I've been trying that "lodge recipe" I got here recently; pretty good stuff; would go down better if I was up on the mountain !}

Yea you're down to 4-5 posts a day and a couple paragraphs. You are a good guy but it is obvious a mile hike a year is big time for you. A lot of talk.
