Our first act of freedom, if we are free, ought in all inward propriety to be to affirm that we are free. William James
Morning y'all,

It's a beautiful, slightly (although it feels much more significant after our summery temperatures over the past few days) snow covered day up top. It feels like a fitting goodbye from the mountain gods. The high yesterday reached 38 degrees. The overnight low was 28 degrees. It was 30 degrees and cloudy at 7am observation. The mountain received a trace of snow overnight. The trails should still be in pretty good shape, but be sure to look out for black ice under the snow. There are bound to be a few tricky spots remaining.

There is still quiet richness, there is still subtle beauty, there is still the never ending show for your sacred sensorium. Forget about what you do not have.

Beautiful sunset photo. The sunset photo is a fitting metaphor for your 2013-14 winter on Mt. LeConte. Happy trails until you return next winter!

Glad the comments were back up before you left JP. I've been wanting to recommend author Wendell Berry to you if you're not familiar with him. Enjoy your 'off' season and stay safe.

Looking for hike tomorrow. If we park at Newfoound gap, take AT to Boulevard and then Le Conte and back, what is that approx mileage? Thx

That is a big day. It is a little over 8 miles one way with about 2500 feet of climbing. If the weather is clear, add a mile (round trip) to The Jumpoff and back on the way up. By the time you get back you will be wore slap out! If you can take two cars and drop one at Alum Cave for the return, that will slice 3 miles or so out of the hike.

The round trip is 16 miles with uphill and downhill sections each way. I did the hike in June 2012 and was very tired at the end. Also, You could have stretches of ice.

Good thoughts, Mark, and a fond farewell to our winter caretaker. As he cared for our mountain, he cared for us.
