Zero Degrees and Plenty of Snow

3/26/2014

Picture
This is one of those mornings when you don't want to get out of bed. When it is 0º outside, it is hard to get out from under that comfy Hudson Bay Blanket. At least the sun is coming up and it is supposed to get a little warmer today. We have 4" of snow on the ground and it is covered by a nice layer of crunchy ice. Hwy 441 did open up yesterday, but as of right now, I am not sure about this morning. You can call the Park to find out about road closures at 865-436-1200. Believe it or not, we had a few families with small kids make it up just fine. Those of you hiking with kids, these kids had a blast coming up and were in good spirits when they got here. I would say each parent knows their child best, but it is doable. Just make sure you have plenty of warm layers for everyone. Give yourself plenty of time to make the hike and we will see you at the top.

I will be staying at the Lodge in August. I live in N.H hike the White mountains all the time. But cannot wait to see Mt. LeConte. Looks just as cold there today as it is here!!!

We got 4 inches of snow yesterday too and it was 4 degrees this morn. in Michigan. Not sure if this white stuff is going to stop this year.

Allyson, we are hiking up tomorrow and hope to take Alum Cave trail if 441 opens up (which I would think it would with the sunshine today). Would we have any trouble following the trail with the snow cover? We have never hiked Alum Cave. I am assuming that nobody would have blazed that trail since 441 is closed. We just don't want to get lost!

I saw where 441 opened about an hour ago. I have hiked Alum in the snow and you shouldn't have any problems.

I did not realize you could text from the top. is cell service available ANYWHERE up top? the only place I have gotten it before is on the way up to bvd trail. We are staying overnight in the fall and need to keep in contact with kids. I had planned to rent satellite phones....but if there is a way to text etc...I wont need to. I hope to see you Friday...weather permitting.

There is spotty cell reception on the deck of the office. Please don't bring a sat phone. It doesn't fit the Zen of LeConte. Send a text that you are ok at the top then shut off your phone and be present.

I have got cell service on the outside deck by the lodge. Text goes through, but is real slow.

I have had spotty cell service on the back poarch of the dinning hall. But that's AT&T I have seen what looks like a cell tower near cling mans dome but don't know what service it is.

I was one of those parents mentioned above. I brought my 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son. Both had a blast are are ready to do it again. It was an amazing trip with great food, hospitality, and plenty of amazing scenery. Thank you Leconte staff for a great experience!

I agree about the ZEN comment totally, one of the reasons I come up. But I have an autistic child and another person in our party has a downs child, so we will need to "check in" periodically with babysitters. But it is good to know there is spotty service. I will check my own phone the next time I summit. Thanks for the help, ya'll.
