Good morning folks,
It’s a beautiful chilly morning up top. The high yesterday was 40 degrees. The overnight low dipped down to 25 degrees. It was 26 degrees and partly cloudy at 7am observation. The mountain received 0.80” of precipitation. There are trace amounts of snow on the mountain with a heavy ice pack on trails! All roads are open so come on up and see this beautiful mountain! Traction devices are a must to reach the summit! Rain is the forecast tonight with clearing skies and sunshine for the upcoming weekend. Yesterday, the rain was heavy for a few hours in the morning and mid afternoon. As the day moved forward clouds broke for 30 minutes unveiling the valley floor. Trails are a mess with the snow melt, which made for a river flowing on the trail above the lodge. Ankle deep slush makes for very wet feet, so a change of socks would help. Tributaries below are sure to swell with the abundance of snow melt and rain yesterday. Friends from Maryville,TN brought fresh veggies and fruits as well as steak and gingerbread for desert. “Wildcat” aka Burt Emerson my company is a Triple Crown Thru-Hiker hiking all 3 long trails in the US, as well as many other long distance trails. Also, the gingerbread king of the Smokies. We enjoyed dinner and turned in to my cozy cabin on the mountain. A great time spent! Also, my walk to Apollo overlook revealed our local bobcat prints wondering around the mountain. JP the longest runner of winter caretakers would always talk about seeing the prints. I’ll be on the lookout for it! SEE YOU AT THE TOP! P-NUT

Good morning from the high country,
Its another socked in soggy, wet, windy morning at 6593’. The high yesterday was 39 degrees. The overnight low came in at 28 degrees. It was 38 degrees and raining at 7am observation. The mountain received 0.19” of wet precipitation. The current snow depth is 1”. High winds dominated the mountain throughout the morning hours waking me up from time to time. The west side of the state saw very bad storms come through with damaging winds. Be careful if you venture into the park today. Keep your eyes open to what’s above you for falling trees! The ground is very saturated and could lead to downed trees and rock slides. Our local crow is out again, I think it wants my bacon and eggs. Not happening little dude! They are always pecking on the windows here at the lodge. Rain is forecasted for today with clearing skies overnight and sunshine tomorrow! High winds blew snow around yesterday morning as if I was in my personal snow globe. The temperatures allowed it to spin around the biggest snow flakes I have ever seen. We never accumulated any snow and finally transitioned into a light rain most of the day. This mountain makes its own mind up to which what the weather wants to do. I love it! The afternoon progressed with Netflix and a new book. Jennifer Pharr Davis “Called Again” A Story Of Love and Triumph. She is a beast, thru hiking the AT in 46 days. The first female to set the record. I was able to meet her when I worked here on crew in 2016. A very humble , sweet person. With Thru Hiking season upon us good luck to those attempting their journey! Have a great day everyone! SEE YOU AT THE TOP! P-NUT Good morning folks,
Its a windy partly cloudy morning up top! The high yesterday was a spring like 42 degrees. The overnight low was a measly 21 degrees, compared to the bitter cold temps we have seen. It was 30 degrees at 7am observation. The mountain received 0” of precipitation but that is sure to change later today with rain in the forecast. Our current snow depth is 4”. No!!!! I love seeing all the snow! Traction devices are a must! Pack your best rain gear it will be a wet afternoon. Remember folks the lodge is closed for day hikers services!! What a weekend! Blue skies dominated the mountain with warm temperatures gives us a reminder that Spring is upon us. I spent most of yesterday wondering around the mountain peaks soaking up the sun with great conversations with day hikers. With less than a week on the mountain I’m taking full advantage of everything that Mt.LeConte has to offer! Being from Maryville, TN I’m just a hop, skip, and a uphill climb to the lodge. My love for the mountains doesn’t end here. I am going on my 3rd season with the National Park Service Trail Crew based in Cades Cove my 2nd favorite place in the park. My love for the mountains and these trails make me appreciate everything the Smokies have done for my soul! The Smokies are my home and I will cherish them forever!! I am a blessed man! Have a wonderful day everyone. SEE YOU AT THE TOP! P-NUT Good morning folks,
Another beautiful morning on Mt. LeConte! The high yesterday was 20 degrees. The overnight low was a balmy 10 degrees. It was 21 degrees and sunny at 7 am observation. We received 0” of precipitation as well as no new snow. Our current snow depth is 6”. Word from hikers that snow drifts are well over a foot! This could’ve been the biggest snow the area has seen in quite some time. All roads are open, so come on up and enjoy the 1st day of March. Spring is upon us folks. Wildflowers will be popping up throughout the park very soon. What a day it was yesterday! Crowds of people flocked to the mountain with eager ambitions to see the snow. Blue skies gave way to amazing views. I spent most of yesterday at Myrtle Point and Cliff Tops. Met some great people out enjoying the day. Today will be warmer. It’s shaping up to be a great day at 6593’! SEE YOU AT THE TOP! P-NUT |
