Good Morning,
Hard to believe we’re already a third of the way through September, but the 2022 summer of rain endures. The radar is a solid green and the skies are a solid gray. Conditions across the region will be wet and dreary much of the day, so come dressed from head-to-toe in waterproof layers if you are adamant about tackling the mountain today in an enjoyable fashion. Between the weekend weather forecast, families being back to school, and the old-time automobile event happening in the northerly gateway communities, traffic inside the park and on the trails will certainly be a bit lessened today. Temps will be cool at our elevation in the 50s and winds will be variable at times with some gusting. Sunday and Monday both look soggy as well. Stay dry and safe out there.

Good Morning,
We’re thankful for mostly clear and sunny skies over the mountains to kickoff this Friday. Hikers hitting the trails early today should have a pleasant time rambling up or down before clouds thicken this afternoon and the precip chances return late this evening. Temps today will continue to hang out in the 50s with a possibility at cracking 60° later. Winds will start off light but switch to stronger gusts of 20mph tonight once storms begin to enter the region. Saturday through Monday is calling for a substantial presence of rain, so gear up properly and come ready for wet conditions over the coming days. What little autumn color we get to partake around the lodge is already swinging into action. The mountain ash trees are transforming briefly into their annual end-of-summer golds, but heavy rains this weekend could send those few pretty leaves packing quickly. Even the witch hobble bushes up top are producing some reds. Have a great day. Good Morning,
As anticipated, we never really shook off the cloud cover yesterday. And finally during dinner service the rain let loose and drenched the mountaintop for several hours. After receiving over an inch of rainfall, trails are sure to be soggy and waterways in and around the park running a bit high. Thankfully we appear to be in for some slight reprieve today. Lodge residents this morning at waking up to a mix of sun and layered clouds with views of the valley below. It should stay that way most of the day before the rain chances return this evening. Temps will continue to spent most of their time in the 50s and winds will be light across the peaks. Friday looks like it will begin similarly to today, but higher precip percentages in the afternoon that could carry into a wet weekend. The annual “Shades of the Past” automobile extravaganza is happening in Pigeon Forge this weekend. Travelers with plans to visit the mountain coming to the park from the Tennessee side should map their routes in and out accordingly. Also be mindful of traffic congestion in school zones during the week, now that the entire nation’s education system should be back in session after the recent holiday. Have a great day. Good Morning,
After a deluge dropped nearly an inch of rain during the night, the mountaintop is sitting thick in gray fog. Views will likely be difficult to come by today, at least from the peaks. We have a slight chance for some more afternoon showers before skies hopefully clear off a bit tonight. Temps are in the mid 50s and will probably stay there all day. Winds are nonexistent at the moment, adding to the eery calm smothering the mountain. Thursday morning looks like pleasant weather is in store for folks hitting the trail early, but then precip chances could flare up late afternoon. Watch for heightened creek crossings and slick places on trail after what’s been a soggy past several days. Have a great day. Good Morning,
The rain gauge is getting a workout lately, compiling nearly 2.5” over the holiday weekend. The solar panels…not so much. It’s a gray mountain top to start this Tuesday, and the drips of water cascading from rooftops can be heard all around camp. A break in the action is expected this morning, although the cloud cover is unlikely to shake off. By this afternoon the rain chances return, so come prepared for wet conditions and don’t be fooled if it looks pleasant elsewhere outside the park. Temps will likely sit in the 50s here again today accompanied by light winds. The clouds and mist will make having an extra layer or two feel good, especially once one’s body has adjusted to the climate after the ascent. Wednesday’s forecast is shaping up to be quite similar, with a calm morning followed by a precip-filled afternoon. Have a great day. Good Morning,
There’s a 100% chance of rain today according to the meteorological professionals, which feels like par for the course this season. The clouds are a thick soup smothering the mountaintop and the rain showers have been on and off through the night. No change is expected in that regard all day today. So while much of the nation will be celebrating Labor Day feasting or relaxing, our hard working crew will continue doing what it does best…laboring to provide visitors a unique experience in the backcountry, rain or shine. Temps will spend their time in the 50s and winds will be up and down depending on how the storms pass through. The Flood Watch for our region is still in effect until 8:00 PM tonight. Weather for the week ahead? Wet. Reminder that our reservations office is closed today in observance of the federal holiday, and will be back open Tuesday during normal business hours. Stay dry, stay safe, and have a great holiday. Good Morning,
Clouds and a pitter-patter on rooftops. That was the story of yesterday, and will be the continuing story into this Sunday. We tallied 3/4 of an inch of rainfall so far, and although there is a break in the action this morning, another round of precip is heading this way. We’re expecting persistent bands all afternoon and evening today. The region is also under a Flood Watch deep into Monday night at 8:00 PM. Given the extended forecast for the week ahead, it’s entirely possible that watch gets prolonged. So use caution on trail paying careful attention to slick spots and wet crossings. Temps will likely spend most of their time in the 50s and light winds will pass over the peaks. Layer up with warmth and rain shells if you want to have as comfortable a hike as possible. Have a great day. Good Morning,
The rain is here. During the night some clouds decided to settle in for what could be the long haul, and it’s been a steady mist with heavier drips mixed in ever since. The precip chances are expected to linger throughout the entire holiday weekend, so it would make absolutely no sense for anyone to attempt this mountain without rain gear in tow. Winds are also picking up and could gust as much as 20mph at times, which combined with the wet will make the 50s and 60s read by the thermometer feel much cooler. The Smokies still pull in the masses of tourists over national holidays, even during sour weather. Please, if you are a guest with reservations in the coming days and you come across ill prepared hikers at any point on the trail contemplating a summit, please advise them to consider their safety and how unnecessary risks without the proper gear or poor research put themselves and others in danger. Let’s all have a safe holiday weekend. Have a great day. Good Afternoon,
Well it was a most delightful run of endless sunshine, but our multi-day streak has been closed by a claustrophobic cover of clouds. Conditions on the mountain top are still quite splendid regardless, at least for the time being. There is only a slight chance of rain showers later this afternoon. Hopefully the clouds cooperate to afford guests a rewarding sunset after a day on the trail. Temps have been slow to creep out of the 50s today after yesterday’s high reached a soaring 71°. After today, the holiday weekend is calling for some not-so-barbecue-appropriate weather. Saturday afternoon sees an increase in storm percentages and doesn’t appear to go away anytime soon given the extended forecast. So soak up whatever sun where you can and when you can while we have it, and come packed and layered up for some wet conditions across the Smokies. Temps should continue to bounce between the 50s and 60s with light winds. Have a great rest of the day. Good Afternoon,
We’re marking off many milestones on the mountain today. It’s a new month, and the upcoming Labor Day weekend signals the unofficial end of summer on the mountain. These next few weeks typically see the humidity begin to ease off some, eventually leading into the famous fall spectacular and cooler temps across the region. What is official, is that we’re now 2/3 of the way through the lodge season. Time sure is flying by with only 12 weeks remaining. As far as daylight hours go, the sun is only granting us 13 hours of light now, and sunset is about to step inside of 8:00 PM. So bit by bit, day travelers will need to keep tabs on how much light they have to ramble through the woods before descending the mountain in a safe and timely manner. We’re basking in glorious sunshine again today, with temps nearing 70°. Lows will continue to be in the 50s and winds over the peaks will be light. There is a slight chance of pop up rain showers for Friday afternoon, otherwise visitors can expect another decent day to explore the outdoors. The deeper one gets into the holiday weekend, the wetter the forecast becomes. But for now, we’ll enjoy this superb streak of sunshine. Have a great rest of the day. |
