Greetings All, It is a pretty windy day for us at 6593. Gusts coming in at 30 MPH has crew holding on to their hats. With this much wind the clouds are being tossed around every which way. We are getting small patches of direct sunlight but only for brief moments. Despite the winds it doesn't feel too cold outside. It is currently 48 degrees and only expecting a high to be in the low 50s. We stayed reasonable warm last night with a low of 45 degrees. Rain is on the forecast for today but doesn't seem like it will hit us until late afternoon and into the night. Be sure to pack that rain gear and warm layers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced that a 2-year trail rehabilitation project will begin next week on Trillium Gap Trail. Due to the construction process on the narrow trail, a full closure is necessary for the safety of both the crew and visitors. The trail and associated parking lot along Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail will be closed May 13 through November 15 on Monday mornings at 7:00 a.m. through Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. weekly. The trail will be fully open each week on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and on federal holidays. Our llama team has been permitted to use the trail for their weekly supply runs. Their days for the season will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Good Morning All,
It looks to be another beautiful day at the summit. A few puffy white clouds floating weightlessly gives the blue sky a little character. Crew finished their morning routines quickly and they are already laying out in the sun, packing backs to head out on some day hikes or taking easy with a book and hammock. No place we would rather be. All of camp is quiet and empty, most likely because people are taking their time on the trails soaking in the views and wonderful weather. It is currently 53 degrees outside and we are expecting to see a high in the upper 50s maybe low 60s. Last night we only dropped to 45 degrees. For those planning a hike up be sure to pack plenty of water as the lower elevations are much hotter. Good Morning All,
And what a beautiful morning it is. Clear skies are allowing sunshine to pour over the summit. Not a single rain cloud in sight has our spirits high. All of crew are hurrying to finish up their morning routine so they can take advantage of the weather and go hit the trails for the afternoon. A few crew members even woke a little early to pack a day bag and have it sitting by the door ready to go. So come on up and enjoy the afternoon with us, most likely to see the crew on the trails too. It is currently 51 degrees outside and we are expecting our high to reach the mid 50s. Temperatures at night are staying consistent with a low of 40 degrees. For those planning a trip up be sure to bring extra layers for the chilly evenings. Friendly reminder that it is usually about 20-30 degrees warmer at the base of the mountain so expect those first few miles of the trail to be on the hotter side. Be sure to pack plenty of water. Good Afternoon,
I woke this morning to a beautiful clear sunrise that peaked around the mountain side and revealed a sea of clouds below us. What a great way to start the day. All morning all crew and guest alike have enjoyed spectacular views and warm sunshine. We saw a family of deer playing behind a couple of the cabins and listened to the birds singing away as cabin got cleaned. Could not have asked for a better morning. As I patiently wait for our llama team to arrive with loads of supplies I have witness a massive cloud formation overtake all of camp. Currently socked in. Weather forecasts are not calling for any more rain today and after receiving 1.2 inches yesterday we are looking forward to staying dry. Last nights low dropped to a surprising 38 degrees but we are warming up fast as it is currently 47 degrees. Be sure to pack extra layers for those planning a hike up. Happy Cinco De Mayo,
I started to serve breakfast this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find the dining room in full holiday spirit. Overnight guests went all out with celebratory music and festive hats. It surely lifted the spirits of all and it was much needed because it is quite the gloomy rainy day outside. Last night we received 1.2 inches of rain and we are not seeing much chance of it letting up any time soon. Be sure to back that rain gear. Thankfully temperatures are staying above freezing as we only dropped to 45 degrees. With not any sunshine making its way past these heavy rain clouds we don't expected temperatures today to pass 50 degrees. Be sure to pack some warm/dry layers. May the 4th be with you,
While we have been under a forecast that has called for lots of rain these past two days we have only received 0.1 inches. Luck has been on our side as we watch thunder storms hit the valley below. Lots of dark and heavy clouds lingering just out of reach. Forecasts are calling for rain later this afternoon but fingers crossed our good fortune continues. Temperatures have stayed pretty consistent with highs in the low 60s and only dropping to the upper 40s at night. It is currently 56 degrees. Our llama team have certainly enjoyed the chance to rest at the summit in rain free conditions. Camp today is filling up fast with day hikers and overnight guests arriving early to try and beat the rains. A notice from the National Park Service that the back country shelter near the lodge is currently closed due to high bear activity. No overnight camping is currently permitted at the shelter till further notice. Good Morning All,
We awoke shrouded in fog this morning, cloudy skies cluttered the horizon soon after. Rain is on the forecast today, but we have yet to see any precipitation. Gazing upon the valley below, the ominous clouds casted shadows of many shapes and sizes. The green grass is slowly creeping up around camp, small flowers accompanied by sprouting weeds. It is currently 56 degrees up top right now, temps shouldn't rise above 60 with this cloud coverage. Yesterdays high was a pleasant 62, with a low of 48. Those wishing to climb the mountain, make sure to bring your rain gear and set of dry clothes. It also wouldn't hurt to bring some warm layers, temperatures tend to be 15-20 degrees cooler than down below. Good Morning,
Roaring Fork Road is officially open now. This road is used to gain access to the trail head for Trillium Gap Trail. It is also the trail our llama team uses to bring supplies to the mountain. One of the most popular features of the trail is Grotto Falls, a waterfall that extends over the trail allowing hikers to trek behind the cascade. A friendly reminder that the National Park Service will be doing maintenance work on the trail this season and the projected start date is May 13. The trail will be closed after then during the week but will open on the weekends. It is a pretty windy morning here at the summit which has our temperature of 48 degrees feeling more like 40 degrees. We are expecting clear skies today but right now we are in the fog. Once the sun gets a little higher in the sky we expected the fog to burn off revealing those wonderful views. No rain on the forecast for today and temps are looking to reach the low 60s. Tomorrows forecast, as of now, is calling for rain tomorrow afternoon. |
