I know the quote for my song is not as cool as Alex's, but we are back on the mountain and getting ready for business. The crew hiked up yesterday in a nice slushy mess. There is currently 7" of snow on the ground and it is melting quickly. The trail was a slushy, wet mess. The high on the mountain reached 43 with a low last night in the low 30's. It is currently 35 this morning.
We are happy to be home and gearing up for another season. I hope everyone had a great winter. Chris and I stayed around Gatlinburg and worked on our house. I am becoming quite the home improvements gal. I guess it is time to go scrub the kitchen down. We take everything out of the kitchen and scrub it from top to bottom and then watch everything as it is returned to its place. Should be a fun day. As of 8:30 this morning; Low 8 , 14 inches of snow and still snowing. Wind is causing drifts. Hwy 441 closed. Clouds should be moving out today and warming tomorrow. There was snow at Alum parking area yesterday. If you are planning on hiking this weekend, please be prepared. Gusting winds up to 35 mph forecast. Clouds and rain early next week.
Rain, Rain go away. We need clear weather to fly. The 2011 season is right around the corner. Chris and I are packing our bags and getting ready to hike up the mountain in the morning. Wouldn't you know, we have had amazing weather for the past three weeks and today they are calling for a winter warning in the Smokies. Unbelievable!!!! The crew will hit the trail around 10 am. As to what trail, who knows. It all depends on what roads are open. I look forward to returning to the mountain and showing you our day to day lives up top.
Alex came by the office on this way out of town. He said it was the toughest hike all winter. He hiked down Rainbow and the creek was overflowing and he had to divert off trail with a very heavy pack. Snow was gone yesterday from the snow, but the report this morning was 2 inches of new snow and more forecast for today. The crew hikes up tomorrow and Allyson should be posting by the weekend.
I'm a-leavin' town for sure, well, then you wont be bothered with my hangin roun' your door3/9/2011
Low 16, High 36. .9" Rain. My Last Post, Then I'm hiking down!! It's raining sideways, and a slushy mess. I'll be sending out emails with pictures and commentary from my hike starting in 13 days, if you are interested just send me an email at: Xanthamus@gmail.com I've enjoyed y'alls banter back and forth, and a special thanks to those of you that hiked up fresh veggies, books, newspapers, etc. this winter. I didn't take any pictures yesterday, but will end with my personal favorite from the winter, cause of it's alien-frost-planet-likeness. Thanks and Take Care Everyone, Go outside and Enjoy the spring, -Alexander QUIZ: Which hour of the day do you think I received the most emails from highonleconte.com visitors?
Low 25, High 36. The trails frozen up some now, which is a good and bad thing; no more soaking feet, but some sort of spikes are going to be needed for comfortable hiking now. Made it down to the jump off yesterday, these pictures are from that hike. Let's be honest, I'd probably be the person on the trail that would seem like a 'sketchy character.' I've never seen or heard about anything that would reason carrying the extra weight in the Smokys. You are allowed to carry a gun in the park, but they are not allowed in the lodge. Well, I've decided I'm not going to create a blog, but will rather be setting up an email list to keep everyone, that is interested, informed. I don't believe the blogging world is for me, but will be able to keep up with anyone who wants to much easier this way. I'll be taking a camera with me on the trip and will include photos in the email and more lengthy ramblings. So, if you think my ramblings and pictures are interesting enough to get an email every once in a while send an email to me: xanthamus@gmail.com And i'll add you to be part of the fun that will be my email newsletters. I promise I won't be overloading your inbox with emails either, I'd guess once every week or two, you'll see something. Thanks, it's been fun. Tomorrow will be my last post. For today was the last of that Wild Bill Jones
And tomorrow will be the last of me High 39, Low 15. 1" Snow.
Well, my plan was to go down to the jumpoff today, We'll see how the trails look, they were just rivers with a bunch of snow caked on top yesterday, not very much fun to hike in. Hopefully some sunny days here until Wed. when i'll be hiking down in the rain or surprise snow. Thanks for the tip Clair High 39, Low 27. 2" Rain, 7" Snow. Woke up to a surprising view this morning: When I went to sleep it was 39 and raining. Since it rained so hard before the snow, it's made a very cold, very wet, slush. Seems the roads are closed this morning. As for hiking up here this week... it's going to be wet all week, because its a mountain all the water runs downwards, and the rain usually finds the trail a good place to run. I wouldn't say any trail is better than the other in the rain for water, Alum can really seem treacherous if it's windy as well. It is comparable to hiking up a river at times. It's hard to say what the weather will be wednesday, considering our thunderstorm yesterday turned into snow. It's still snowing hard now, and supposed to keep going for a little while. The guy in the shelter was even more surprised by snow than I, being from Louisiana, never having had hiked in snow. We persuaded him, over some hot coffee, that Boulevard to Icewater isn't a good idea to do in trail runners today.
High 38, Low 28. 1.5" Rain.
Raining, It's been slowly coming down since yesterday around 3pm, It's supposed to pick up and become a thunderstorm today/tonight. Hypothermia weather; 33, raining, and windy. Well, I don't hardly know anything about camera gear. Im not used to carrying around a camera with me most of the time neither, using a camera daily this winter has been new and challenging, especially on rainy days like today and the next couple days, when all the pictures turn out... gray. The screen door High 44, Low 24.
Windy, and Clouds gathering. It seems that all you have to do to make kombucha taffy is leave a little bit sitting in a jar with the lid partly off and let it dry out, i'll let you know what its like once mines ready. I've just read some great ideas for kombucha, including: Salad Dressings, Marinade, Smoothies, Foot Soak, Dog Biscuits, etc. |
