Good Morning,
It’s a cloudy wake up call this Wednesday. We have a slight chance of rain showers this morning, and then again later this evening. In between we’ll likely be staring at more overcast skies with the hopes of some occasional sun. Going to be a bit breezier today, with sustained winds of 10-15mph and gusts up to 20mph at times, so secure those hats to your heads! Temps will be much in the same, with a low in the mid 50s and today’s high in the mid 60s. It sure looks like once we move through Thursday morning’s lingering rain chances, we are going to be prospering in solid sun for several days. After a rainy summer on the mountain, we can get down with that. Good Morning,
It’s a mild morning atop the mountain as we check off the first full week of September. Temps are starting out in the mid 50s and we hope to reach the mid 60s this afternoon. Clouds are setting in thick over the peaks but there is still the possibility of sunny skies later on. After supper time, our region could receive some intermittent rain showers. Winds will be light today. Wednesday’s forecast looks pretty cut-and-paste from today. Although the “tourist summer” season has concluded, there is still quite a bit going on in the area to draw in the crowds. A reminder that these next two weekends see Pigeon Forge host consecutive vintage automobile cruises. So traffic in our gateway communities will still see plenty of congestion. Also worth noting, GSMNP is repaving the road surface in Cades Cove, so the loop road there will be closed the next three weeks. Expect visitors who might traditionally spend their Smokies time there to look elsewhere in the park, which could mean any of the roads and trails on Mt. LeConte. The day time road work along US 441 (Newfound Gap Rd) is ongoing, but we still haven’t received a specific timeline of when that work will hamper available parking at Alum Cave. Have a great day. Good Afternoon,
Happy Labor Day to all. As promised, there was a little liquid precip action during the night and early morning, but eased off in plenty of time for folks to start enjoying the kickstart to the day. Clouds have been and will likely linger around the mountain top much of the remaining day with occasional breaks of light. Temps are mild and with a light breeze, cool to some. We’re going to be lucky to break beyond the 60° mark today. We’re looking at a slight chance of showers through midweek, but by this weekend sunny skies seem to take hold. Count on plenty of traffic congestion in and around the Smokies today as travelers make their ways home while others still hope to get some outdoor enjoyment returning to the grind tomorrow. Have a great rest of the holiday. Good Morning,
There has been a decent stretch of sun so far sun and as expected that has brought out the hikers. Should be another bustling day in the Smokies with families enjoying their last escapades before the remaining schools resume session around the country. Temps are in the mid 50s this morning and should get up into the 60s easily today. Winds will be light and the skies a mix of sun and clouds, but the chance for showers and thunderstorms increases as the day progresses. By tonight and into Labor Day morning we could see some wet conditions across the region. We’re well under 13 hours of daylight these days with sunrise happening after 7:00 now and sunset at sliding in before 8:00. Between the milder temps and waning daylight, it sure feels like autumn is approaching fast. A suspicion only confirmed with just 80 days left in the lodge season. Have a great day. Good Morning,
The holiday weekend and last hurrah of the tourist summer is finally upon us. And it is shaping up to be an outstanding time for outdoor exploration. The sun is up and the humidity is down, a perfect combo for soaking up some southern mountain skies in the coming days. There are a few peak-level clouds still hanging around, but today and tomorrow are promising abundant sunshine. Temps are in the lower 50s currently, and we should ascend into the lower 60s for the afternoon. The rain and thunderstorm chances seem to return for the Smokies by late Sunday and could stretch into Labor Day Monday. Winds will be light, but with these newfound cooler temps, that could add a bit of a chill for those aren’t quite ready for it. So be sure and bring the layers, especially for enjoying those stunning sunsets. A reminder that our reservations office will be closed on Monday in observance of the federal holiday, so if you have any last minute questions before making a visit to the lodge this weekend, be sure and reach our dedicated team before 5:00 PM tonight. Our office will resume answering phones and emails during normal business hours Tuesday morning. With it being a holiday weekend and such stellar weather in the forecast, it’s no mystery to expect that traffic in and around the Smokies will be heavy. So plan your routes and start times accordingly if you have concerns about avoiding the congestion. Patience is key when visiting the nation’s most visited national park! Have a great day. Good Morning,
Aside from some lingering clouds over the mountains, Ida has officially vacated the premises. In fact, we shouldn’t see a drop of liquid precip today, just some good old sunshine to help brighten everyone’s spirits. Now that a cold front has pushed through, we can finally welcome in meteorological autumn. High temps across the region will be much less oppressive than what we’ve endured in recent months, and more importantly that infamous southern humidity will be scaled back. That’s just one reason September makes for fabulous hiking weather in the Smokies. We’re starting off in the mid 50s this morning, could reach the lower 60s this afternoon, and might even dip down into the 40s this evening. The holiday forecast looks like it’ll will bring more sun and clouds, with precip chances returning by Sunday. Water levels along the creeks will continue to subside making any unbridged stream crossings much easier than yesterday. Our team can confirm that Trillium Gap is now clear of debris, important for getting our lovable llamas back in business. Have a great day. Tropical Depression Ida update 12:30 PM: Conditions continue to improve across the region. There are lingering showers producing not much more than a mist as the storm’s remnants fizzle out. Winds continue to ease back. The remainder of the day should see a mix of clouds and intermittent showers but ought to bring some partial clearing by this evening. Creeks are running high as one would expect after several inches of rain, but there have been no reports of unmanageable crossings up to this point. All roads and trails accessing the mountain remain open. We are in the process of gathering intel on post-storm trail conditions. Good Morning,
Hello September! Some good news this morning as the National Weather Service has seen fit to withdraw the Flood Watch and Wind Advisory ahead of schedule. The mountains are still thoroughly socked in with clouds and as Ida rolls out, the last of its lingering showers are expected to cling to the peaks. So even though the lodge could continue to experience rain showers much of the day, partial clearing could gradually begin outside the park with each passing hour. Who knows, by tonight we might actually be rewarded with a sunset! Winds are to remain breezy, the forecast calling for sustained winds of 10-15mph and gusts up to 25mph. And like the rain chances, they’re expected to weaken as the day progresses. Temps up top should remain stable in the 50s. Be sure and layer up though as that can feel much cooler when you factor in the wet and windy elements. All roads and trails accessing Mt. LeConte remain open. If any of the terrain looks out of place during your hike, please be sure and let us know so any obstruction on trail can be addressed swiftly. Looking like sunshine returns for Thursday. Stay dry and have a great day. |
