Great Commute

10/20/2010

Picture
My commute to work yesterday was phenomenal. The colors are vibrant. The air had a crispness and the sky was blue. I wish I could say the same for today. It is currently raining up top. The high yesterday was 57 with a low of 40.
I have had a few questions about the winter caretaker. I just wanted to let people know that the blog will continue thru the winter. Alex, a past crew member, will be hiking up in November and taking over the blog for the winter. He has been on crew for two years. You will get a break from me until March and then I will be back.

Fall in the Smokies

10/17/2010

Chris and I still on days off. We have been enjoying the amazing weather and display of color. The leaves are hitting their peak. We are looking forward to our hike up on Tuesday. We should have a stunning day to be on the trail.

Hiking Down the Mountain

10/12/2010

Chris and I hiked down yesterday to enjoy some time off the mountain. I took some pictures for you to enjoy. The leaves are on their way to perfection. This weekend should bring a beautiful display of colors.

Peaceful Time

10/11/2010

Picture
It is so peaceful during early morning. The guests are just waking up and looking for coffee. It is great to wake up and see what the day has to offer. Today is looking promising. Blue skies are above. Yesterday was a blue sky day as well. The high was 65 with a low of 43. There has been a lot of activity on the mountain. Hikers are out and checking out the fall show.

Fall Colors

10/10/2010

Picture
There are some fall colors on the peaks below camp. The cooler nights and warm days have helped to bring them out. If I had to guess, I would say next week is going to be a great time to be the woods checking out the amazing display of color. Yesterday was an incredible day. The high was 62 with a low of 42. The skies are blue and you can see great distances from the top.

Sunny Days

10/8/2010

Picture
It is the start to a beautiful day on the mountain. The days are warming up and the nights are nice and cool. The high yesterday was 58 with a low of 36. We are back to fall weather up top.

Melting Snow

10/7/2010

Picture
The temperatures, on the mountain, can change dramatically day to day. The 24 hour low from yesterday was 26. The high was 45. We did not hit freezing temperatures last night. This is a prime example of why you should be prepared when going out into the backcountry. You may start out in the sunshine and warmer temperatures and then experience freezing temperatures at night. The snow is melting up top and we are left with patches of snow on the ground. With the warmer temperatures coming in for the weekend, the snow will be gone by tomorrow.

Day Hiking In Cold Weather

10/6/2010

Picture
It is still cold on up top. The high yesterday was 33 with a low of 26. The clouds made for an amazing sunset last night. The mountain has been busy with day hikers and lots of guests. It is that time of year to make sure you have the right clothing if you are going to attempt a day hike. Remember, we are at least 20 degrees colder up top. Wear layers and bring a jacket. Another key piece of advice is remember to drink plenty of water. You may not feel like you are sweating, but you need to stay hydrated when hiking in these conditions.

BRRRR!!!!

10/5/2010

Sparky taking a break in the snow.
The guests huddled around the heaters trying to stay warm in the 32 degree weather yesterday. We got another .5" of snow and the low last night was 23. I think the llamas enjoyed the nice cool weather.

SNOW!!!!!!!!!

10/4/2010

Picture
Winter is officially on the mountain. 3" of fresh snow greeted us this morning. This is the biggest first snow since 1979. The high yesterday was 39 degrees and the low was 24. I guess it is time to pull out the  winter clothes.
